most people go straight for the 1200s because that would maximize your flow.
i myslef dont use them, but i know people who do and for the most part, they really like them.

I think modding the 900 is the smart way to go - sure you are sacrificing a small amount of flow, but for the savings in wattage it is priceless. Five pumps at 8.5 watts each is going to make a huge difference in the summer than five pumps at 20 watts each. With a well designed system you can have metal halides and awesome water flow and dodge the cost of a chiller.
I will break the bank on everything else, but I personally refuse to ever be dependent on a chiller for any tank I will ever own.

Heck I had 5 -1200's in mine that my new CL system eliminates the need for. NO MORE extra heat but it cost a small fortune to eliminate it!..I never even thought of what a 900 compared to a 1200 used. Yet the cost of electricity here is minimal, compared to the monster I now have in the basement using 300 plus watts 24-7, not counting the fuge lights and skimmer which are another 125 watts. 24-7.
For me my lighting is a much higher user than small pumps.
For me 400 watts on DT 10 hours a day. One carbon canister using 35 watts 24-7 before the monster in the basement to count, I need to buy stock in the electric company!!

The wattage from the pumps is not a concern as far as money goes - if you can afford saltwater tanks I would certainly hope you can afford your electric bill. The wattage is a concern when you consider that all of the wattage from you pumps translates to heat being added to your water 24/7 and water does not readily dissipate heat.

yes, but you have to consider the tank size. these are going into a 225gallon im assuming. modded 1200s would be perfect imo, and i doubt 4 of those would add to much heat in a 225.

i have 4 1200's in my 125 5 feet long... im doing the kit to 2 of them.. i think 4 would be rediculous and i didnt wanna have problems keeping the sand on the sandbed hehe.. but 200+ gallon u can probably do it.

I have a one that I did the mod on, I plan on getting two more of the Sure Flow models, they work great, at least the one I have now does, occasionally I have to turn off and on(I turn some pumps off during water changes) a couple of times to get it to go in the right direction. I think the new Sure Flow mod eliminates this problem. I would use the 900's, from now on to do the mod, I don't think you are sacrificing much flow, the reason for the stronger electrical draw on the MJ 1000 and MJ1200's is to push the 60" head and handle the back pressure of the little hang-on skimmers that use them, IMO. You are only dropping 65gph on a stock 900 at 8wt, compared to a 1200 at 20wt. Also, have been told that if you put a 1200 impeller in a 900 it becomes a 1200
. So, by making them stream pumps you no longer need the extra push, as you would in other applications. Just my 2 cents.

the sure flow mods on the 900 and the 1200 will push the same water. about 1600 gph. however, the company that makes the sure flow is coming out with a new "high-flow" systems to be used with the 1200. that will push out well over 2000gph. that'll happen because of the size of the prop they will be using and the larger magnet in the 1200. but since you went with the 900's (which is what i have) you will be very happy with their performance. i've heard mixed reviews on the use with a wavemaker tho.
