The plastic cover is all it comes with. You can purchase actual filter covers for them, but they are sold by themselves and not included with the power head.

I have them. They trap detritus(sp?) and then you can wash the filter sponge out. I think its a good idea. JMO

I have one facing the top and the other facing right across. I'm not really sure where to point them, I guess its just a matter of what you think. I still need another PH

Hi, Chadman. Total flow in your tank is also called turnover or turnover rate. Take your filter flow rate in gph, add the gph rating of the MJ600 powerhead, add any other flow such as a protein skimmer if its a Hang on model. Now take your total and divide by number of gallons of your tank. If it's 15, for example, that's called 15X (15-times) turnover (per hour). 15 is good for fish only tanks. reefs you want 20X to 25X.
Personally I would not use the suction cups to mount the Maxijet. I tried them and it fell to the tank bottom and sucked a lot of sand and blew it all over my rocks. Since then I use the other hanging bracket.
IMO don't bother adding filter to the powerhead if your main filter is adequate. It just takes up more space in your display tank.

The foam cover for your Power head is called a pre filter, it traps alot of little stuff from your tank that may never reach your filter/skimmer, they are a good idea but not needed!
If you take apert your power head you will see why they should not be used upside down, the way the impeller is designed gravity is what keeps it set into the right position, I would also think it would be quite noisy upside down??
And yes you do want flow at the bottom of your tank aswell, just point it downward.
