I have both in my tank and the modified Maxijet gives you much better/more flow and is a heck of a lot cheaper.

My vote go to Koralia, IMO it disperses the flow so that it covers more area, not just jetted in one direction. But the big plus is that they are quieter and uses a magnet that holds in on the side of the tank and not suction cups.

I had an EcoMod and a Koralia 4 in my 125. The EcoMod has a stronger concentrated flow, where the Hydor has a really spread pattern. Pretty much what was said above. They sort of are apples to oranges. They serve different purposes in creating flow in your aquarium.
The cost is really negligible. A MJ1200 is $20, EcoMod is $10, and the Magnet mount is $15. A Koralia 4 is $45 most places. The Koralia is build better, you can remove the pump running out of water, and the prop doesn't vibrate at all, where the MJ will shake like hell, though the plastic itself is a tad cheaper on the K4. The K4 also has a much larger inlet area, so if something like an anemone was to float free and get stuck, much less likely to be shredded with the Koralia. Lastly, you have two options with the EcoMod, 1200gph, and 1900gph IIRC, and only 1600gph with the SureFlow. Koralias are available in a huge range from K1-K8.

I too prefer Koralia...they stay put and don't shoot out just a jet stream of water. I hated maxi jet, I tried tying them up with clear fishing line, gluing a magnet to it and propping it up on a rock...they fall or twist around and create sand storms and havoc.
Whoever invented the Koralia deserves an award for best aquarium invented gadget. Worth every penny spent on them.

On top of these problems, mine also were loud even after much tweaking. It also periodically would spit out alot of micro bubbles and I could never stop that problem.

must say, i prefer koralia. But with that being said, ive never been shocked by a maxijet. I had a koralia 4 that short circuited and nailed me bad. thank god it wasnt in my tank at the time. the kicker is that it was brand new.
I must say though maxijets are good on a wave timer and make good salt mixers. pros and cons for each, but for the DT i prefer koralia because of the way they disperse alot of flow

aquaknight: i read that the sure flow mod boosts the MJ 1200 to 2100gph.

maxi-jet sureflow for outright moving water. Koralia more dispersed. Maxi-jet WAY smaller than K4. you can put the shroud inside the K4 housing. sure-flow mod finiky with which maxi-jets they like. certain sizes work better/quieter depending on which propeller used. without the sure-flow magnet dont even consider the maxi-jet mod. with the magnet plus maxijet the price equals out. If your using more than one I prefer the maxi-mod. with just one powerhead I like the dispersion of the koralia better IF its enough.
