maxi mods? Does anybody have one?

I was on reefcentral and they are touting the awesomeness of modding out a maxijet 1200 to push around 1200gph in a tunze type format.
There is a site call Mj Mods that sells the kit for 24. This would take the whole price of a unit to under $50 total for pump and kit.
Does anybody have any experience or suggestions. I kinda like it.
Would 1500gph in a tunze type flow be too much for a 55g reef.

I am currently rounding up the supplies to mod my Maxi Jet. So far it has been a real pain in the ass. I recommend ordering the kit from MJMods.
I have a 60 gallon tank and think the MJ 1200 and 900 I have now will be plenty of flow after the mod. Before I was considering buy another jet.
Not only does the mod increase the gph but increase the width of the stream.

Thanks. I am looking to do the same thing with my 50g that I am setting up. I am going to start with one 1200 and then see what happens from there. I am thinking of working my way to a wave maker device with two 1200s.

Let me know how it works out for you. Becaus eI saw one in action in a LFS yesterday and it was doing a great job. I find that 1000 GPH makes a mess in my 90g reef but that's because the stream is so straight, with this mod the stream was very spread, so it looked like it can fit on your 55G as well.

I am finishing my stand tomorrow and I will be able to start putting my tank together hopefully by the end of this week. Then I will let it cycle. But I am seriously thinking about modding a maxijet 1200. It sounds like a fun project.

I have 2 mods max that i have done, all supplies bought on MJmods. I wanted to have both on my 55gl, but it was 2 much, so I only run 1 of them the other I just keep as spare.
But remember some of them will make very loud noise if not assembled well. I love the flow it gives...

Hey i'll buy the extra one from you if you would sell it. I just dont want to mess with the Powerheads. I can trade you for a non moded Maxi 1200 about 2 months old. Plus some $$$. Please let me know.

If you replace the prop with a smaller one that provides less trust then you can still use the mod on the bigger MJ. Most moders are looking at max performance they can get from the MJ for boasting reasons. I think a smaller less efficient prop will make the MJ motor last longer, IM(untested)O.
