Anyone has kept Maxima clams with PC or VHO light more than 1 year?

I have had three of my clams for over 5 years. I bought my last one 2 years ago and they are all still alive.

HI, nice topic.. I was thinking of getting one myself but I too don't know about the lighting so I will just put it out there and see what clam folks think.I have a 29 gallon with 110 watts of PC lights. I have never ventured to far aways from softies but would like to get a clam if it is feasible. The tank is full of the softies I want, but a clam would be nice. Thanks

From what I understand Glass bends light and displays diffrent spectrums. It also acts as a filter of light. I guess that is why clams look diffrent. Due to the bending and filtering of the light. I know they look a whole lot better from above! As far as keeping them under VHO. I have heard of many successes with shallow (18" or so) tanks but none in the larger ones. But, as with all stories I am sure there have been some kept in deep tanks with VHOs.

Thanks everybody for your inputs. I decided to purchase the maxima clam and put it on the top. It opens after very short time. Hope it lasts with my PC's light.

i have a blue maxima and a purple crocea on the top center of live rock, i have had them almost one year now. i have 3 x 96w pc lighting. one smartlite, one actinic and one 6700k white. both seem to be happy, and colors are great. only problem is they are on the top lr so viewing is a bit difficult. in the beginning they were sensitive to fish swimming by, and close quite often, now they are used to it and hardly close even if fish swim by. i feed them dts twice a day and i cross my fingers hoping my pc is good enough.

H2O, Maxima has 2 holes. Are they both mouths? DTS on the mouths? Thanks in advance.

H20, never mind... I found the answer:
Clams receive food from the zooxanthellae but they also siphon water in from a slit on one side of the mantle then release water from a circular hole on the other side. This process allows the mantle to pick up any plankton that is in the water.

clams filter feed on planton foods and use those holes for feeding and repiration. they feed mostly on phytoplankton and some zooplankton foods.

There is another consideration with clams. You need to really think before getting one if you have live sand. Bristle worms really like to eat clams.
I lost one to bristle worms. I had mine sitting dead center of my tank but on the sand bed. After having for about a month the clam appeared to be dying from thi inside out. It didn't take but a couple of days.
If you get one and you have a live sand bed you might want to place it high up on your live rock.
