I have answered about 5 threads concerning this topic in the past week. If this is why you posted this all you have to do is look through the posts, there are designs and pics posted in this forum, just look for them. Where in PA are you?

I guess I just posted this because #1-I just cannot seem to make a decision..afraid of making costly mistakes, etc.#2 it took like four trips to different places to just get the right plumbing parts because I have such lame stores around me..and last but not least..#3- I want everything *yesterday.
no seriously..I live in central Pa..about an hour from state college.
I did see your plans..I just don't know if I need all that..I am thinking I just need a very simple fuge with protein skimmer. My main reason for doing this at all is to get the most equipment out of my main tank. I think I have enough LR for bio filtration. soo..

If you were closer I would offer to help you build and plumb it. I currently run a 10 gallon Fuge on my 30 gallon DT. it has absolutely no baffles in it, just a 10 gallon tank. My Home made skimmer is a HOT design feeding the fuge (It draws from the DT to the skimmer and dumps into the fuge)with a U-Tube returning the water to my DT. The tops of both the 10 and the 30 are the same height ( meaning the fuge is next to the DT and on a platform that raises it to the same height as the DT), so you don't need all the baffles and chambers if you do some inventive planning. What kind of skimmer do you have? I can probably design a simple fuge for you. Do you have pics of your tank and stand? I also need dimensions of the INSIDE of your stand.

Do you think you can stuff a 20 long in your stand? I don't know the dimensions of one off hand. I have one I can measure for you, but I'm leaving to go to a race soon and won't be back till late tonight. I will give you more info tomorrow.

I use a 20 long for mine and its pretty simple, although I did have my LFS install the baffles.
I have a 65 gal main tank which is 36", so the 30" wide 20 gal long fits nicely underneath.
From left to right, its got the overflow pipe, skimmer, digital thermometer, 3" fine sand bed, caleurpa, cheato, live rock rubble, some snails and hermits, 26w PC light, heater, clip-on fan for cooling/evaporation and return pump. It sounds like a lot, buts its simple.
So I'd think the longer tank would be better than the taller one, even though the volume may be the same.
Good luck

thankyou..
could you maybe give me measurements of where your baffles are and how they let the water flow..from bottom or top to each chamber?? I am a little unsure of how water gets from chamber to the next. especially the fugium..does the water just overflow into the heater and pump up chamber?

Sorry I lost track of this post, I had to use the search to find it again. If you can use a 20 long I think it's a better choice than a 20 high. You have more room for the different chambers. a 20 long measures 30"x12" footprint 12" high. will this fit in your stand? i also need the dimensions of your skimmer with the pump. A pic would help too. Is your return pump submersible? If so, I need the dimensions of the pump.

yes..I have plenty of room for the 20 long.
One thing..I bought an ASM mini G protein skimmer..but I might take it back and get the G-1..it is a bit bigger so I will give you those dimensions. that way I'll be sure to have the room if I do decide to go with the bigger one.(I'm still doing the research) anyway...
ASM skimmer footprint is 6 1/2" x 11 1/2" -- 19"H
pump is mag drive 950. 9"x4" w/filter sponge attached (pump is submersible)
I don't have any pics, sorry.
Thankyou for checking this out for me. ***)

OK here we go, you will need 6 pieces of 1/8" glass cut to 2 sizes. The tall pieces should be 10.5" tall, as wide as the inside of the tank. The short pieces should be 6" tall, again as wide as the inside of the tank. You want all edges of the glass seamed, this is basically just removing the sharp edges from the galss to prevent you from cutting yourself. Don't forgt to tell the glass shop to do this or you WILL cut yourself up every time you work with it. It might be helpfull to bring the tank to the glass shop so they get the width right. You will need to cut a notch in the silicone along the bottom of the tank to get the pieces that reach the bottom of the tank to fit right. These pieces get siliconed along both sides and the bottom, making sure to fill in the notches you cut out. The other pieces get siliconed on just the sides. It is easiest to have the tank on its side to silicone the pieces in that don't reach the bottom. For the pieces that do reach the bottom, silicone them with the tank in it's normal position
Spacing of the baffles,
A-7.5"
B,C,E and F- 2" (these can be smaller, but it makes it very hard to get your hands in between them when Siliconing them in place)
G-5"
D- approx.9" (I only gave you an approximate size as you will work from the ends in and what it winds up being is what it is)
The pieces that don't reach to the bottom of the tank are 1" off the bottom. The 2nd piece from the left will go right up to the bottom of the top frame. this might give you more than a 1" space at the bottom, this is not a problem)
Mark the outside of the glass with a grease pencil or tape to show you where to place the glass.
I've found it easiest to silicone 2 pieces at a time, Silicone the outer 2 pieces first and work your way in.
Before siliconing in the pieces place your pump and skimmer in to make sure they fit aAccording to what you told me, they should, but better to know before the glass is in place.
If I missed anything or there is something you don't understand, just post, I will look out for this for a few days. If you won't be getting to this and need to contact me,you could post your e-mail, and I will get in contact you, you could then edit your post and remove your e-mail. Sorry but I refuse to post my e-mail Addy on a public forum.
Good luck with it.
For anyone reading this, this Sump/Fuge is made from a 20 long. 30"x12"x12"
