I do get some vibration when holding the line and an occasional knock in the line. Holding the drain above the water is helping. Nothing in the overflow box. LOL its so small nothing can fit in it.
Lets entertain the idea that I do go with a bean animal design. Would my current return pump be enough flow for it? My current tank will only last about 6 months maybe less before I upgrade (most likely tax return ). My thought would be to try the BA design out and maybe within a few months upgrade my return pump to something that would fit on my future tank. I am thinking either a 55 or 75 gallon tank but no bigger then that. My only concern is that my return pump currently would be too little flow for that design. I really appreciate everyones thoughts on this. Thank you
I can't say 100% the BA design would work with the pump.....It's possible, but I would be under the assumption the lines would have to be scaled down....1" would be overkill IMO, but I'd be a bit more confident with 3/4" lines, but you can't deviate from the design....Needs all 3 bulkheads....open stand pipe, siphon line, and the emergency.....
Ok thanks. Can my overflow drain be the same size as my return line? I was under the impession my overflow needed to be bigger. I can buy some 3/4 pvc and a reducer or even 3/4 spaflex and see if that works better. Just want to make sure before I buy anything lines can be same size.
A good assumption would be to size your lines the same.....Again the BA design was based off of 1". With that being said the pump has to be able to fill the plumbing where as the smaller pump your running wouldn't do that. I on the other hand upscaled the designed, because of pump choice running the Reeflo Dart, I opted to up my plumbing size to 1 1/2" which if not tuned correctly could over power the design....But again that is why there are safeties built into the system and it's easy to tune.
I will certainly do the BA design when I upsize my setup and obtain a bigger pump. With my current setup and keeping the glassholes kit, can I reduce my overflow drain to 3/4 after the 1inch elbow? Would this quite down my existing setup and still keep up enough with my current pump?
I meant puting a reducer from the 1 inch elbow coming out of the back of the glassholes overflow. Basicly I would run 3/4 spaflex off the first elbow all the way down to the sump. I think I can live with the current noise level and with 1250 gph aquaclear PH I have more then enough flow in my DT.
I think I have my stocking list set now. I am going to do a fu manchu lionfish or fuzzy dwarf lionfish. He will be my first fish in the tank and be solo for about 6-8 weeks. Then I plan on a scorpionfish or stonefish or angler. Thats pretty much it. 2 fish maybe 3 at most if I find something else that works. I just cant get away from predators. About 20 years ago when I was 14 I came home with 2 red snakeheads that were about 3 inches long. By the time I got rid of them and feeding them 24 goldfish (didnt know better) every 2-3 days they were 16 inch killing machines. Since that I have always loved predators and after much research I think the Fuzzy or Fu would be a perfect focus for my 29g. I may even just keep him solo.
I recieved my 50lbs of dry rock from Reefrocks.net today. When fedex delivered them I almost had a heart attack. It sounded like someone kicked the box all the way to my house. To my surprise there was almost no rubble. The noise was coming from 2 or 3 half inch peices. I spent most of the day aquascaping and trying to come up with the most hiding places for the lionfish and will post pics soon
Honestly I try never to reduce my drain line size.....If I have to it would be at the very end if needed to make a connection....You possibly risk a chance of something clogging when you "bottle" it down that way......It's worth a shot, but beware of the risk as well.
I have been researching Octopus for the last 10 days or so. My LFS has a pacific red and ever since seeing it I have been obsessing over it. I did not plan on upgrading my tank size till tax return but when there is a will there is a way right? Finding this store in my area has been a godsend. Just to give you an idea of this store they have a huge shark tank in the middle. While talking to the owner and telling him how much I liked his huge display he shows me a video on his Ipad of what he has at home. OMG he built an 18 foot swimming pool in his BASEMENT!!!! He runs 7 large dehumidifiers and houses a bunch of several different species of sharks , some of which are 4 ft long. It costs him $200/month in food (or at least thats what he admitted to) and has supplied clients throughout the NorthEast that include some of the people on the show TANKED. I feel like I hit the jackpot. The exotics he carries are amazing and all seem to be in outstanding health.
Long story short I know where I will be buying my fish. I mentioned to him that I would love to have a slightly bigger aquarium and we got to talking about different sizes. In my current appartment I do not have an abundance of room but would still like something with at least an 18inch deep footprint. Low and behold he said he has 38 50 gallon tanks at his house and would sell me one that needs to be cleaned for cheap. It is pre drilled with (2) bulkheads that fit 1 inch pvc. When he said $45 I jumped all over it. I go tomorrow to pick it up and will probobly be getting divorced over it.
So now my new dilemma. I have this 29g set up the way I want (actually quiet ) and is about 5 days or so into a fishless cycle with about 7 pounds of live rock seeding 50 pounds of base. I now have to decide on what to do with all of my current equipment. Do I take the 29g and make it my sump for the 50? The hole in the top center kind of poses some obstacles. Do I sell the 29g with the overflow box and 20gH sump and wait till ***** has the 40 breeder for 40 bucks again and use that as my sump?
Keep the 29g and let it cycle and seed while I work on building a stand for the 50? I will need to save up for a better return pump, custom lid, stand, and some other things anyway. I just dont know if transfering my sandbed from my 29 to the 50 in a few months will pose any risks. It is already mid october and taxes are just a few months away. I am figuring do it right and use that money for either a decent skimmer or chiller. I guess that will be determined on which Octopus I choose to keep. Another reason I would like a bigger sump is so I can house his Live food. Bait stores about an hour away carry different species of crabs all year long and It would be ideal to keep them for a good diet. I know I will only get 6 months to 2 years for the average lifespan but this is all worth it in my opinion.
I would like to hear some suggestions and concerns that you guys see with anything I have mentioned. Thanks
Wow, I love the wall of text.
I'd set up the 50g with the 20g as a sump. I don't see the overflow hole being a problem. Just seal it up with a piece of glass, or put the bulkhead on the inside of the tank and cap it off. It will save you a little money. Besides, I don't think you could get a 40g breeder under that tank anyway. You would have to build a custom stand to fit it,... and the stand would have to be wider than the tank on top. That kinda creates a little problem.
I'd set up the new tank with the 2g sump and just transfer everything over to the 50g asap and get the cycle going. The 29g could be sold as a tank with an overflow. 20g high sump is plenty for a 50g.
I like octopus brand skimmers. Awesome construction and solid performance.
I have no idea why my paragraphs get taken out and my posts get put in a huge wall of text. I also have to preview my posts in editor mode recently but I dont remember always having to do that? Did I miss click on something?
I also get a message saying please enter something before you post....as if I didnt type anything in the reply comment.
I'd contact SWF.com and see if there's something wrong with the site or your computer. BUT, for me, there's nothing wrong... you may be missing a few updates on your computer. who knows.
Ok alot has happened since I last posted. Here is the short short version. Built a 50g display tank with 50g sump doing a BA overflow ctc weir and the whole nine yards. had it up and running with a huge refugium with dsb and basicly everything exactly how I wanted it. Thanksgiving morning my downstairs neighbor wakes me up and says his studs are all wet.........This was the worste thing that has ever happened in my 20 years of keeping fish. sold the entire setup and now I am back to the 29g with 20g sump. My question is have you guys ever seen RO tubing crack? I am planning my ATO and plan on using my 10g tank as a resevoir and feeding a float valve in my sump with RO tubing. This will be a simple gravity fed system but I can NOT have any leaks whatsoever or there goes my entire security deposit on my apartment. Thanks for any feedback
