Mercuy Vapour

Well well,
My buddy showed me something kinda intersting.
He has a 300 Mercury Vapour security light on his house. He saw me carrying a bag of salt into the house and we got to talking about the whole saltwater thing.
Well, as soon as I said "Metal Halide" he said that was the lights he uses in his security light.
"Bull ****" says I.
"No really" says he "I ran like 2 Mercury Vapour lights and got sick on the weird orange hue it was putting out. My buddy gave me an old aquarium bulb and I put it in. To his amazement it ran". He tells me.
'Horse pucky' thinks me.....
He goes inside and comes out with a cealed MH bulb from Lowes. Breaks the seal, and puts it into the light fixture and then asks..
"You want to bet some money it will come on?"
'Hell no' says I.
He goes in an to my slight amazement the light comes on and fries my retinas....
He then goes on to explaine to me that Metal Halides are simply Mercury Vapour with 'Halides' added. If the light will start the Mercury, the mercury will start the Halides. He explained it farther. I asked how long the bulbs last thinking that perhaps they might not run as long. He tells me they last for about 5,000 hours. (i think hes over estimating that LOL)
Weird....

Not really....
As stated before, FIXTURES and BALLAST from lowes or HD will work fine. BULBS will not. They are not the right spectrum.
Be careful to match the bulb and the ballast properly, or the bulb will not last its full potential.
On the 5,000 hr part, he is probabilly right. Old street lights (the ones that look like they are orange) are old Mercury Bulbs. Shows you how long theyve last... none have been installed (at lease in MA/RI) for about 15 years.
Aquarium bulbs are replaced more often because the wattage of the bulb goes down with age.
