How many watts per gallon does everyone use?
Which lamps does everyone like best?
How long do you leave your lights on?
How much life do you get out of your lamps? :jumping:

I run
3x400 MH
2x110 VHO
i use radium halide bulbs and URI vho bulbs
i get around 7 months out of the halides and so far around a year for the VHO. i plan to run them till they die. they are only used for color not for there light so i can keep them just about as long as i want
i run my lighting as follows
actinics on 8am
center halide on at 10am
side halides on at 11am
side halides off at 8PM
center hallide off at 9PM
actinic off at 10PM

72 gal bow front
2x250w DE Reeflux 12K - 8hrs a day
2x39 T5 Ocean Blue - 11hrs a day
The life of a MH bulb is going to vary on the brand the type of ballast used etc. In general I would say you get 8-12 months. If you are running an HQI ballast they tend to drive the bulbs harder and the life is shortened. You tend to get more PAR because they are driven harder though. As far as bulbs go it's going to depend on what kind of look you are going for and what type of ballast you choose. The same bulb will have a different color and intensity on different types of ballasts. Recommendations for bulbs also vary depending on whether you choice DE or SE. Most companies SE vs. DE are not the same either.

I agree somewhat with what DB really depends on the ballast bulb combination, as to what color rendition you'll get. I do know that running HQI's does overdrive a bulb and theoretically should shorten the life of the bulb, but don't whole heartedly agree that you'll get more PAR out of a bulb just because your running it on a HQI ballast

2x400 watts of XM 10K mh's & 2x110 watts of URI actinic VHO's over a 100 gal display.
I like the combination of 10K lamps with actinic supplimentation. Gives a nice dawn/dusk effect and combined they produce a crisp white light.
My actinics are on for 10 hours and the MH's run for 8 hours.
I replace the VHO's every 10 months and the MH's about every 9 months.

Driving SE bulbs on HQI ballast does shorten their life and you do get more PAR. Check out Sanjay's site and compare a 250w bulb on a M58 or electronic vs. M80 ballast and you will get higher PAR ratings for the M80 HQI.

DB...I agree that sanjay does have some top notch information but that link you posted violates this sites policy. The banner on the link alone is reason enough to edit it. Please refrain from posting links of that nature.

My lighting provides 2.5wpg on my 300g (3x250W DE HQI; no actinic supplementation). The 2.5wpg figure may seem low, but my lighting setup provides more than an adequate amount of light for the corals I keep (softies, polyps, and mushrooms).
I've been running Phoenix 14,000K DE bulbs since November, and these have been my favorite lamps to date. The lights run for 8 hours/day, and I hope to get at least 12 months out of them.

On 120g reef I run 2x250w MH Radiums & 4x110w VHO URI's super actinics.
vho on at 1pm
MH on at 2pm
MH off at 9pm
vho off 11pm
I replace the vho's around 8 months
MH about once a year.
I do NOT have a PAR meter but I can tell when its time on my tank. You can defrinately see a difference when you swap them out.
