my dad ordered me some metal halide bulbs and lamps.. nwo these are thekind you'd put in your garage and he wants to make a hood, and mount them in it, this sound ok to you guys? my thought was .. will it get to hot?
Just make sure the bulbs you use have a Kelvin rating of at least 55- 65K. Many shop lights and utility lights have a 45K rating or less. This will not provide the right spectrum for coral growth, however, your algea will love it.
you can buy a regular MH ballast from home depot for like 35 bucks. The bad thing is, like dVS said, its an outdoor use and it gets alot hotter than the ballast's in the aquarium world. Just make sure you buy good bulbs from an online source. HTH and good luck with your MH lights and new clean up crew!

bulb color spectrum is really the only thing that youll have to worry about the advance transformer magnetic ballast is the same as any ballast you can get for a reef tank, however electronic one are totally different!
good luck
