metal halide system under $100

Has anyone else tried this DIY project out? Here is the link in case anyone is interested.

I am curious is anyone knows if you can use a different bulb than the 6500K Iwaski that author recommends.
 
I did mine in October. I think the Iwasaki bulbs are very green. My ballasts make no noise at all, you can set them up remotely from your tank. I used the Advance ballasts from Graybar. There was no minimum. They ordered them on monday and I had them by friday.
If you decide to go for it , buy the mogul socket and the bracket from the bulb supplier. It is worth the extra $10.
I believe that the Iwasaki bulb is in fact a mercury vapor light, or perhaps designed to operate on a MV ballast. In either case, that would preclude using any other bulbs with that ballast.
I could be wrong about that...I hope so.
