I am not debating you got water on the bulb to break it as you indicated. I am trying to figure out how water got through the glass to the bulb. I may need to make some modifications to mine to prevent this, If you can help me to understand how. My glass does not have any open sides that water could actually splash through to the bulb. Is yours different than mine in the picture? They are PFO mini pendants. :notsure:

it got through somehow when i had it at 4-5" from water surface.my glass doesn't have open sides either, to get to the bulb i have to take the fixture apart...

Bummer, I just have to loosen a screw and rotate the eccentric out of the way and slide the glass out to get to the bulb. Thank goodness, I don't have to take the fixture apart. What brand is yours?

FWIW. google "reefkeeping".
This month Sanjay Joshi wrote a great article, "Everything You Need to Know About Metal Halide Lamps and Ballasts"
You wont find an answer to which is better, but you will find all the info on what the difference is between the two.

Table 1 has inaccuracies regarding base types. They do correct one of them in the text under Lamp Bases. (FC2 for the 250WDE)
The link to Sanjay Joshi's bulb/ballast compare is on there as well. He has added a number of DE bulbs. I believe the Giesmann 250W Coral 13000K DE 1 listed there is the 250 Watt 14500K Metal Halide Bulb - Megachrome Coral, Double Ended bulb in the online database.
