I am going to spend the dough and put metal halides on one of my salt tanks....
do you have to remove the glass hood to use halides? ie...does it get to hot?, refraction? I am thinking of putting mh on my 72 bow front and dont want to damage the hood..
thanks in advance

Congradulations. You will find that metal halides produce a lot of heat. You should remove the hood for better intesity and you wont have as many heat problems. HTH

If you remove that hood, don't you need anything to protect the tank in the event that water were to splash onto the lamp? I have been contemplating the same. I currently have a 46g (something like that anyhow) bowfront all-glass and it has a plastic hinge that I believe would actually melt under the MH lighting. I believe you would have the same issue. The bigger issue I think you and I would face is the fact that we would have to custom build a hood to fit that bow front (or buy one if I knew where) that could house the MH and perhaps a couple of PC lights. Any suggestions anyone?

If you use a good wire harness there is no way it could fall unless you took wire cutters to it.

I can build you a canopy. Or you can bulid one. Canopies are EASY, stands are the pain. You have to worry about load, drippage, weight..... With a canopy you support the weight of lights. No big deal. Email and I'll tell you how I would build it for you. And yes, I did read BOWFRONT. No big deal !!!
