I would think that if you put a MH on a 10gal you would cook everything plus have the worlds worst algae bloom. Why you ask? If you have the $ for MH then you should have the $ for a much bigger tank.

I would think that if you jumped to MH that it would give more light than normal which would make the algae. Right? When I added 2 250 14k to my 75 I had to slowly work the lights up to 8 hrs. That took alittle over a week. Plus do they make a 70 mh? I have seen only as low as a 150.

On another page that I participate in there are a couple people that have 70watt metal halides over their 10 gallons with 2 40watt powercompacts. Needless to say they have autotop offs.

Well, to answer your question wwfstyle, I was just wondering what would happen.......plus with a biger tank , everything costs more, the tank, sand , lr, lights, salt,.........I think that this tank , the 10g, has been no prob. for me, I know that I really dont have much leaway as to how much water evaps. before my chemistry starts getting crazy, I add water to it every night before bed............the ro water that is use is right under my tank, so its no prob. to just get a cup full an top off the tank. On top of that if I got a mh bulb setup, I would not buy it as a pre setup kit, I would get all the parts I need and assemble it myself, but even to add a mh bulb will cost me enough, due to the fact that I would have to buy some fans for it, reflector,bulb,ballast,........all the components........The main reason I switched to a 10g from a 30g was the cost of everything.......The lr alone would cost me about $270 it is $6
a lb here where I live, an thats only 45lbs. So now do you see why I down sized??lol I am only 17 I dont make alot of money, so a downsize helps in more ways then 1.

You could do it but you would have to keep the it like 12-16 inches of the water and then still could have heat and evaporation problems. But check out Jkicksters tank I think it was a 15g AWSOME reef tank with MH over it and it was one fo the best reefs I have ever seen.

If I put a MH bulb 12-16 inches off the water, could I put a piece of plexi glass over the tank to keep the evap. down?? And also point a fan at the tank/plexi glass cover to keep it cool??

at that height most of the heat wouldn't reach the tank anyways so i think your evap wouldn't be that bad, and i do beleive i read someone had a 150 on a 10 that did great.

1st they do make 70watt MH but it's probably a DE bulb.. only mogul base bulbs i've ever seen are very very low wattage, the reason you work your way up when you get MH is because you're acclimating light.. it can burn corals if just slapped on there...
