In my own personal experience keeping cyphastrea they do better in moderate-higher light and flow. Obiously if we're talking rediculously intense light in a shallow tank, then yeah maybe keep it out of the light more, but when I think of shade I think of keeping it under a rock overhang...

Exactly...That’s why I was so confused..if the books OP read said shade, and he just put it lower in the tank...Then everyone posted and said it needed more light...???? Spanko to the rescue!

No you misunderstand. Heshe has a Cyphastrea sp and the literature does call for shade which in MH terms means low to moderate or bottom of the tank in most cases depending on the tank depth. I only brought up the chalice Echinophyllia spp. because there is one with the same common name. However in this particular case both coral like the same kind of lighting and flow.

REALLY!!! Now I leaned something! That would be so confusing to me. Shade would mean under an overhang to me too. How in the world would you know if the book means MH terms or othewise???

Like anything else in this hobby, investigate multiple sources to see what is the common thing. I would like to know what literature says to keep them in shade though, using that term "shade" because I have not seen it before.

Agreed. The only time I have ever seen overhangs or shade mentioned are when you are talking about nonphotosynthetic corals like sun corals. They do not need or like lighting, period. When they say shade from MH lights that means that MH is way too strong and it would need to be down low. But that is quite misleading. Usually the different sites I have looked at will say high medium or low, or no light. To me, high has always meant MH, medium is T5, and low is PC. And depending on which one you have and how strong then you would place the corals accordingly.
So, since it says shade from MH, and you have PC, I would say place this coral medium to high in the tank. Try high and see how does first.

i moved them up to the middle of the tank, in moderate flow, see how they do in the next few days, i am due for a water change as well this weekend so that may have an affect as well
