What is the diff between the K rating on the MH lights. The set i am looking at comes with 15k lights. They say 10, and 20 are available. Should i care?

It is how Blue the light will look... 10000k will have almost no blue and 20000k will be very blue...
IMO the 15000 is the best...

10k will be a more white with a slight hint of yellow. but it will give you the best growth, 15k will have a slight blue look to it and make the color of the corals look better but not as fast of a grower..except the Phoenix 14k, it has a great blue and high par so its good on growth as well.
20k will give you the bluest look and the slowest growth

also, the lower the k value the more par you will have, which is a good thing if your trying to grow corals. the higher the k say a 15k you won't have to supplement with actinics to get the bluer look that a lot of people crave.

is that the same for flourescents? lower the k whiter the light?
Yes... K ratings appearance dont differ from bulb type to bulb type. 10k is considerd daylight the less you go from there the more yellow the light is, as stated above the higer you go the more blue.

10k bulbs resemble the light from the sun entering the water from depths of 10-30 feet...14/15k 30-60 feet and 20k 60-90feet....as sunlight enters the water the different hues are filtered out and blue has the longest wave lenght so it is filtered out last hence the reason the oceanc is blue
