MH Light Problem, HELP!

Just setup a mh light system, 3-250 DE, the bulbs are housed in some exterior 500W halogen fixtures.
The problem seems to be the lights get hot and then trip the breaker!!!
Does this sound right or is something else wrong???/

What kind of ballasts are you using? Typically the halides have the highest aperage draw when you first turn them on.

Are the fixtures vented at all? Maybe the lamps are just getting too hot and causing the ballasts to work harder than they should. You may need to pull one ballast off that circuit and plug it in somehwere else.
Depending on the lamps you are using those ballasts could be drawing over a 1000 watts easy so if you are on a 15 amp breaker that doesn't leave much room for anything else on the circuit.

Lights are hooked to a dedicated 20A circuit with a GFCI outlet.
No ventilation on the fixtures.

I think I found the problem, the pendents got hot enough, in just 1 hr, to melt the wire nuts. This exposed the metal core of the wire nuts and allowed the to short out.
I'm going to try running the wires outside the pendent so hopefully they don't melt.
Thanks for the help.
