I have a 50 gal tank and am going to add MH lighting w PC. 250 W MH with 130 w PC. I am planning on bulidong a canopy, my question , how far off the water level should my lights be? Im aware I will have to add a chiller as well. Thanks in advance for your answers, my goal is to be able to have and grow SPS corals.

I have heard a minimum of 8 inches. I have mine at 12 inches. If you get to close you will have salt creep on the reflectors. BTW, you might not have to have a chiller. Hook up some fans, one blowing in and the other blowing out. Those fans should keep it cool enough.
Keep a reefin' :happyfish

First Congrats!!!!!
I have 2-250 MH's and 2 110 Actinic. (over my 55)
I have them 12 inches only to help with heat. I have one fan blowing in and one blowing out and the heat factor has no effect on the tank.
Your corals will love it. I have many Acropora under the lights and they love it! My clams are doing great also.
Remember if you already have coral in there to slowing introduce the new light...I started at 3 hours and increased it by an hour a day until I was back to normal...some will say that is even to fast to introduce that much light, but everything seemed to be fine with my stuff. Let me know how it works!
