What is the best kelvin rating to get the best color out of your sps. I know you sacrifice growth, but I really want nice colors. I will be supplementing with VHO atinic.

hey, im not the smartest person on stuff about corals. But i remember richard rendos(300 gallon coral farm) said that 20k's give them the best color, and something else.

I have 2 sets of 10ks, and one set of 20k 400watters,
IMO ,the Hamilton german bulbs look like sunlight,
the venture 10k american made bulbs, look a little blue,
the 20ks are real blue, now thats with the VHO I have ,
also I think they look ok without Actinics,
its all your preference, when I get bored of the look,
Ill test more and see if the corals react differently:)

Is it true that if you use a 20k MH bulb that you do not really need actinics? The spectrum is preatty much there!

I run 2 400W radiums (20's) MH and supplement with 2 antics. They only overlap for 4 hrs each day, otherwise they are on by themselves. When they are both on, its not too blue like everyone says. In fact it is the most soothing light I have yet to see. My tank is EXPLODING with life and aglae growth. Extremely glad I took the leap................GL

In viweing the results of the poll. I see that nobody has gone with 12000K.
Any reason?
I just bought a 12000K 250W for my system, because I figured it was better than the 10000 without being as blue as 20000.
Aren't they relatively new?

Fulcrum,
Per your question, I have no experience with them but I seem to recall other aquarist that have run the 12K & 14K's not being that happy with them (or at least as happy as they were with other bulbs!).
I run 2 x 250 10000K Ushios and 2 X 110w URI Super Actenics and am very happy with their appearance and the growth and color of my corals!

This topic can be debated to death.
Generally it's believed 6500k (iwasakis for example) provide superior growth, and that 20k provides superior color in sps. This can all obviously be debated.
At a recent club meeting Sanjay Joshi spoke, a well known lighting expert. He is a professor at Penn State and has an incredible tank there run on 10ks alone with no supplementation. I spoke with him and he has grown corals under sakis with no supplementation from actinics. The corals don't need it, it is more for our visual appeal (yes I know about blue light at depth but I am accounting what he said ;)).
When I get my 180 going I am leading towards what attml has... 10k ushios with actinic supplementation. Shying away from radiums as that look is a little too blue for me, and I like the option of having three settings on my tank to compare...
1. just 10k
2. just actinic VHOs
3. both
I have seen many tanks, and that's the combination I like the best.
Some corals look better under different lights. There is no "perfect combination" in this regard...
Beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
My take is go with the spectrum you like and don't worry about growth for it will come under anything...
