When I get back from vacation in August I will be starting to build my new canopy to house MH's. The problem is thay I have never ran MH's before; and was wondering if I could get feed-back on what K you use? I'm thinking 20K or maybe 15K bulbs. These will be SE and I will be running 3 400watt bulbs. Input please.
Thanks

well with 6500k you will get the best growth..for 10k you will get good growth and ok color...20k you will get ok growth but really good color......I suggest 250w instead of 400w (double ended HQI) or the double ended 400w (not sure if they make this though)...............the best is 10k XM's (they have the best growth for 10k) with alot of URI VHO actinic suplement for color
I have tryed many bulbs for color and growth and this has worked the best for me (i have a smaller tank so use 175w and pc actinic bulbs)

Well I already have 2 MH ballasts for the 400's so that is what I'll be running. I am going to some how get my exsisting VHO's to be actinic "back-ups". Don't know if I'll run the 4-4 footers or change to 2-5 foot bulbs. Thinking 4 but the canopy's room will have the final word.
Reefer44-- Don't you think the 10K has alot of yellowish light? I like the clean white w/ the 20K's( I know alot of blue and will need to run a white actinic or something), but heard that 13/15K's give off the best combo.

Don't want to hyjack your thread, but do those who upgrade put their own retros together, or do you get an electrictrian? Just curious, because lack of "ablity" on my part is mostly what has kept me from jumping to MHs.

I bought 1 dual and 1 single ballast (used) that came complete with retro fits and I just need to mount them in the canopy. But things seem to be color coded and that would make things easier.
Any body else with suggestions/thoughts?

hey a guy i know has tested many many bulbs (like Sanjia but tested 250w instead of 400w) and for best growth and overall benefit he finds the 10k Xm's work best...theres no disputing that this will give the best growth and is probaly the most natural......yea it gives out a little yellow but if suplemented actinics it looks fine......
spsaddict: although you get good color with 20k you just can't get the growth that you can get with 10k....and i have seen corals that are under 10k's with not to much actinic supplement(somthing like 2 110w bulbs) that show just as much color as corals under 20k XM's or Radiums
also almost all of the 12k or 14k's out there aren't made very well and don't give the color and growth you can get with ether the 10k or color with 20k.....you would think they are in the middle, good growth and color, but they just don't seem to give much of ether (have tried 12k and i see more growth and same color with my 10k)...................i am sticking to 10k intill XM comes out with a 12 or 14
Brad
heres the guys sight that tested all the bulbs....he's on another board as jb ny....i know he runs 10k 250w but i am not sure how much actinics (probally between 200w to 400w)
