Milkcrate cave?

Personally, I like the crate idea, but not the drainage pipe idea. Those pipe tunnels are just going to become a place for bristle worms and other creatures to hide out. Your eel might like it so much that he stays in the pipe and you don't see him nearly as often. Just my .02

You can go to Lowes/Home depot and buy some acrylic and make one --- the problem might be finding the Weld-On (I use weld on #4) to bond it together with. Now that acrylic is brought up that is exactly what I would use and I would build my own cave with it. If you have a plastics shop that carries acrylic you can get black as well for just a little more.

not as bad as you might think....I thought about this too when I made my jewelled moray a hiding place out of pvc...
They make tuff stuff (yellow spray foam) in a black i believe for ponds... Works great..

If you still what the square thing look for the IIRC they are called Critter Cages I think they make some that a big enough to transport larger Lizards and such. They are made out of Lexan and can be drilled would work great for what you are looking for. Try a ***** or Petsmart for one.

Really, just grab a couple and contact the manufacture of the crate (probably just a name you'd have to look up the contact info/#). I'm pretty sure they ship things like strawberries and oranges, and the like in milkcrates or something very similiar to milkcrates, so I'd think they'd be food safe? Maybe stop by like a farmer's market and see if they have some different crates?

I can tell you right off, farmers markets use wood crates and cardboard boxes w/holes.

Definitely think you're right.

Though, I've used plastic crates in the past from the dollar store with not effects, and FMarini even recommends using something like a laundry basket to introduce new fish, which is definitely not 'food safe'.
I think if you follow the procedures in the link, you'll be fine. The plastic milkcrate are made out of, is the same stuff as a 5gal bucket. Just a matter of finding one that didn't hold motor oil or something...

What about a custom built acrylic container. I have a "glass trophy" box. Its acrylic. I had it made for my helmet from college. It was almost 10 years ago though. Its that ring company all the kids get their High school graduation rings from. Im sure you could get it built with 5 sides and cut your own holes. My box was $150 but it came with the helmet mounted inside and I cant get it out. It has a fancy cherry oak bottom. Id take pictures but my house is in a million boxes due to moving this weekend.
Or DIY project.

Another idea

One could use the bottom of all these Salt buckets we collect and cut them off and only keep the bottom. Then cut cave doors on several sides and place 2 bucket bottoms together. Hard to describe, better yet see picture.
