Hello all,
Well, after several months of curing live rock, buying equipment, etc, I finally was able to start set my 80 gallon up and get it going.
I had already cured about 110 lbs of live rock in a separate container but didnt want to take any chances. So, I put my rock and sand into my tank and started another cycle using the "shrimp method". After about 3-1/2 weeks my levels were good ( and before you ask, they were as follows:
Amonia 0
PH 8.4
Nitrite 0
Nitrate 0
Specific Gravity 1.023
Anyway, I added two fish, a small clown fish, and a medium sized Yellow tang.
After the 2nd day I noticed a "slight" increase in amonia and nitrites. They were as follows:
Amonia 0.25-.050
Nitrites 1
Nitrates 20
I made sure I didnt overfeed and monitored the levels 2-3 times a day....and now its been 3 days and my Amonia is back down to 0, Nitrites are still at 1 and Nitrates are down to 10.
My question is this. Is it normal to get a mini cycle when introducing new fish into an aquarium? If not, then what could have caused the mini cycle?
Any help would be appreciated.
Oh and BTW...the fish are doing well....they are swimming all over, appetite is great and they show no signs of stress. Believe me I have been watching them pretty closely so I would notice any change in activity or other appearance.
Thanks,
