i currently have a male green mandarin and i was wondering if i would be able to add a spotted mandarin? i know i can put a female green mandarin in with the male with no problem, but what about the spotted could i add either male or female?

you would need an insane copepod production rate to support them, but I am sure you are aware of that. I am interested to see what the answer to your question is though because I have no clue...

ya trust me i got tons of pods.. i currently have the one male in there now and i dont even think he has made a dent in the pod popullation, plus he eats mysid shrimp
, but i dont expect the other ones to eat mysid but i am setting up a 46 gallon refugium under my tank and that should be a big plus to the popullation.

r u sure about that... cause that is what i thought cause i know males of the same species of dragonets fight but they arent the same species.

All of the sources that I have read from point toward disater when you have more than one male mandrine. I looked long and hard for females, but they are very hard to find.
Basically the outcome would be a fight to the death. Just like japanese fighting fish.

ok thanks... females arent all that hard to get... ive had one before all i did was order online and in the comments say "it MUST be a female or cancel the order"... works everytime

I was under the impression that 2 males will work as long is one is psychedelic and one is dragonet. This only applies to compatability, not pod support. I NEVER recommend more than one mandarin in anything less than a 90gallon with tons of established rock.

so you think it could work? cause i do have a 90 gallon with 160lbs of LR which has been in there for a few months short of 2 years

I am almost sure that it will not work unless you buy them as a mated pair. They are a fish that likes to be alone. But that is only IMO
Good Luck if you try it. Let us know how you make out

ya i certainly will let you all know when i do do it because i am curently trying to figure out a refugium to put on the tank then once thats up for mabye a month ill probably add it that way if they do fight i would be able to move one to the refuge. but as i was saying i have kept 2 green mandarins (male and female) in a tank before which i am sure wasnt a mated pair, but i am really looking to see if i would be able to mix the green with the spotted (another male prefable) but being that i havent gotten any respnses ive been looking for was that someone has kept one male of each species, i will probably one female from either species depending on what i feel at that time. but im really pushing toward the spotted, unless i get a personal experience which says it didnt work.

I will give you my personal experince it did not work adding a spotted. There was a size difference though. But good luck.

And of course that is just IMO

First, how do you tell a male from female?? I have a 140 with 200lbs rock a 1 green,1 red, and 1 spotted. They never even go next to each other. If they do they just pass by and go about looking for food. If you look at http://www.melevsreef.com/links.html
under the video "Manderin Diner" he has about 5 or 6 in his tank.
