Mixing saltwater sediment

When i mix my water it gets foggy... which i found to be normal?.... and then there is white sediment, some precipitate, all over cords and power heads....
Is this normal.. or am i doing something wrong..
I use instant ocean reef salt

Warm your water and use a power head to mix your salt up for 24 hours before your water changes. The water should be crystal clear before you add it. Undesolved salt will burn coral and fish.

Its been 36 hours now.. its kindof clear but theres still taht white slimy residue on the chords heater and power head... Kindof has a pissy smell now..

You salt has been exposed to moisture. What you are seeing is undissolved calcium carbonate. Just clean you mixing bucket and tools and make sure you keep the top on your salt bucket tight. Nothing you can do about this bucket but you now know for the next time

WHAT?!?
Hes talking about when he adds cups of salt to his water theres a white film on the equipment, Of course he exposes it to moisture.
Just for the record I get the same problem, its also along the bottom of the bucket. I scoop the water out with a gallon pitcher and try not to collect any of it, if it wont dissolve in that bucket I dont want it collecting over time in my tank.

Wow how stupid of me. But wait WHAT IF. He leaves his bucket in a state that the salt can absorb moisture. The excess moisture causes a reaction between the calcium chloride and sodium bicarbonate this reaction creates calcium carbonate. When he mixes his salt the calcium carbonate residue will not mix but rather adhere to his mixing bucket and powerhead. And that my learned friend is the white sediment

I put rice in my salt buckets in mesh bags. My containers seal very very well, but I won't use salt that clumps that way, so I'm extra careful. And Mr. Florida is correct. Even though salt is meant to to mixed eventually in water, it's suppose to be stored in a dry place. Humidity will ruin your salt.
The settling out of particles can happen with well stored salt too, though. All the granules in the bucket aren't salt, it's a multiple of additives that we throw in, to give it the correct composition. These additives weight different, are shaped different and are sized different from each other. You could be grabbing a different composition of the mixture everytime you scoop.... sometimes you get more carbonate... other times you get more magnesium. If you made the whole bucket one scoop at a time in separate little 5 gallon buckets, the reading would not be the same in each bucket.
Humidity adds to the problems even more because like substances clump to each other and that big ball you have in there could primarily be a single component that now won't be mixed in the proper ratio.

This is the first time i have used this bucket, and i just bought it. When i store my salt i hammer the lid shut... and store it in a dry place..
There are no granuals on top in the bucket..
Would getting the salt out of the bottom of the bucket help at all...
So where do i go from here.... is it bad that this is happening..

I don't think its bad, can't be 100% sure as i stated before it happens everytime I mix salt. I just am careful not to pick any of it up as I don't want it collecting over time in the tank whatever it is. Its probably like the other guys said, to much of a certain mineral that can't be dissolved correctly.
I had this residue when I mixed my first batch of SW also, no idea I use Instant Oceans Mix also.

I am a little concerned about the "pissy" smell...that just does not sound right.

Actually the residue dose has a distinct smell. For it smelling like cat piss, you will have to ask a cat owner

Well it is clearing up a little... Your not suppose to close a container when mixing water right... And ya emailed company waiting for response in next couple days...

I use a 20g trashcan to mix and I lay the cover on top loosely, mostly to try and keep the dog hair out! But there is still a gap for air...
