mixing saltwater

Can you pre-mix your saltwater in a 30 or 50 gallon can and keep it to use as needed? What are some other alternatives to use besides buying bottled water and not using tap water? Could you use tap water if you have a filter on the faucet? I want to have a 200-300 gallon shark tank and am trying to make sure I have everything I need before starting to make it easier. I'm a long way off but am trying to learn as much as I can.

RO Unit. With the system your looking to set-up, it would be unthinkable to not have one. It would be money well spent -- no question. You'll save yourself a ton of money in the long run. Good luck, and happy researching. :)

a ro/di unit stands for reverse osmosis/de-ionization filter. i have a nano so i just buy my water so im no expert but basicly its a filter with some canisters on the bottom. the reverse osmosis is (i believe) just water passing through a membrane and filtering all the particles out, and de-ionisation is removing every single thing from the water. it uses positive and negative charges to atract elements leaving the water completely spotless.
the only thing else i know is that you shouldnt drink ro/di water because the di water goes through your system and scraps it of a bunch of stuff, kind of like corosion.

I use a 5 stage with a uv ro/di unit I would never put tap water in a salt tank, all the additives cause alge over time and also sharks are so sensitive to anything you'll want to spend the $400 to get one as ro/di can run a buck at the LFS. good water is one area not to skimp on as it will make the rest of the time you run the tank go good bad or ugly.
