I am very interested in this also. I have heard they are great, but know of no one who has done it. I am thinking about ripping apart my tank and doing so because I can not get my nitrate below 40-50 ppm no matter what I do. So if anyone has experience with it please do post.

Ask your LFS what his nitrates are. I'm sure he will tell you 0, but thats the only reason why I would do it is to get me nitrates down.

Your better off testing the lfs water quality yourself. Around here there is store that use to keep there fish in hypo-salinity and they also had detectable amonia. Know the quality of livestock you are purchasing. Don't believe the word of a person in retail who wants your money. Do the research yourself, take the time to test there water.

When I went back to this lfs and talked to the owner about his problems he played dumb. Told me some BS. Never went back again.

after long term testing there is no discernable differences in water quality between a plenum tank and a DSB tank. just more effort involed setting up a plenum. (this is a semi quote from anthony calfo)

Here's a link describing it http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...02/feature.htm
If a method works for another reefer- don't jump on the wagon and hope for the best. Research all possible methods and decide which method works for you. Factors to include are initial start-upcost and monthly cost. There's alot of reefers using the Zeo, Prodibio, Barebottom, Berlin method to list some of the more popular ways of maintaining a reef tank. I've read where alot of reefers are now using a combination of methods now, running a Berlin method but also using Zeo or Prodibio additives.

I couldn't agree with this more. Always test the water quality of anyone you purchase from.

Talk to RustyJ. Last I knew he was all about them. They reduce nitrates through anerobic respiration under the sand bed. All garfs tanks are plennums.
