Ive been doing some reading on Moonlights and LEDs. Can anyone give me some insight into the main differences between them. Which ones do you prefer? pics would be great thanks!!!

I have some Moonlights that are LEDs. I also made a choice to have Blue LEDs vs White LEDs. Not sure about other moonlight options. I guess you could get a very low wattage Fluorescent lamp but with so many options to choose from in LED I would think that a waste of time. I hope that answers some of your question.

The LEDs used in moonlights are usually low-power (like 1W). The ones used as a main source of lighting are the higher quality and higher wattage (3W) LEDs like the Cree XREs or Luxeon.

are all LED's rated 420-480nm? why are some crazy expensive and others really cheap? my goal is to add one to a 5 gal that looks really cool and also provides some photosynthetic growth during the night cycle. ive also seen some tanks where the LED/moonlights are set in the back half of the tank and overpower the DT bulbs so it looks like a deep blue glow behind the rocks...this is what i am really after. how do i do that?

They are alot less then that in most cases like .1 of a watt.
HP LEDs are 1-5 watt usually.
The HP LEDs produce a full spectrum of light, but moon lights produce a blue 460-470 nm spectum that is why blue moon lights are cheep and HP LEDs are expensive.

so are you saying that the HP LED's hit the 460-470nm as well as others? what would you recommend i go with? i want them to overpower the daylights and make the back half of my tank glow blue. how do ui think i could accomplish this?

only full spectrum HP LEDs hit all spectrums of light, you can get HP blue LEDs as well. You have to ask the manufacturer what the color spectrum is. If its 6500K or above its a full spectrum LED.
