It takes a LONG time for LED's to burn out. I also leave mine on 24/7.
I read on my leds that I put above my tank that they are supposed to be able to be left on for 10 years straight before they burn out. Also they use very little power so I would say it wouldn't really matter.
Having said that I do have mine on a timer and there is a period of about two hours in the early morning that there is zero lighting in the tank.
I have a DIY moonlight kit also and have on a timer . Had the leds 3 years and few are out now . Time for some new ones . I found my kit on ---- from The Lebos . Basically an email with downloads for the kits . You can get everything at radio shack but he sells everything a lot cheaper .
