my way

NO, NO, NO! Sorry but there is no easy way to put it. Idols need very large tanks. Even though it's eating, chances of it living for long in captivity is rare, and then it is by very experienced aquarist. It's a shame something so beautiful is so hard to keep.

When I worked at a distributor I was picky about which zoo I would send them to. I asked if anyone here ever heard of someone raising one Idol

i hate to tell you this but if you havent seen the fish eat chances are it isnt. Alot of times a lfs will say anything to get you to buy something. A lady came in with a fish covered in ich to my store and asked me to identify it. She was told it was a "spotted black platy" and it was really just a black molly covered in ich. So next time your there, even if your not going to buy it, ask them to feed it.

Bad advice IMO, especially for a 75 gallon.

Definitely not! Moorish idols should not be purchased. If you buy this one, more will be collected and brought into the LFS because they are selling. It is a bad cycling that needs to broken. We, as the intelligent aquarists, need to break it.

Of course i agree but he sounds dead set on getting it anyway, so all you can do is pass along good advice and hope he takes it!

My advice is leave it in the store so they dont order any more. Every time you buy 1, they have to catch at least 5 more to replace it because that many will die in the process. (actually it's more like 25)
He wont just be killing the one he buys, hes causing the death of the others as well.
This is the most difficult fish to keep of all available. If you dont have at least a B.S. in Marine biology and a tank over 8' that has been running for over five years, you will kill him and cause the death of at least 5 more.

Glad to see there are still responsible aquarists out there!

True, there are some responsible aquarists out there. Hopefully no one will buy the Moorish but chances are someone will since they are such pretty fish. To bad we can't attach a sign to the tank that says;
"If you buy me I will most likely die and so will 5 others like me when they try to replace me"
"If you don't buy me I will still probably die but this store may not purchase any more of my kind so at least my death may save more of my kind and my death will not have been in vain"

What reallly scares me is all the little kids who see FINDING NEMO and then want to get one and thier parents buying it because of the crying begging kid and then sticking it in a GOLDFISH BOWL because the LFS didnt even bother asking any questions, just getiing the sale. Do You Think This Happens? I DO!

Maybe not as extreme as the goldfish bowl, but I do think a lot of them are sold because of the movie, unfortunately.
