Moral Dilemma (ww1jd)

I have a moral conundrum, and need help.
So, this morning, i run to lowes to buy a soda and get $20 cashback.
For whatever reason this morning, I decided to use the "self checkout". first time i tried, card read failed. so i tried again. again, card read failed. there is a cashier monitoring the self checkouts, so she calls me up here so she can swipe my card. i go through the motions, it works, she gives me money, and i go on my merry way.
I get to work, and realize that i only took out $20, but she gave me a $20 and 2- $10. Meaning, she gave me an extra $20.
My moral dilemma is, what do I do with this extra $20 ? I cannot keep it, since it doesnt feel right holding onto it. It feels like stolen money to me, and its been nagging me all morning. Do I give it to charity? Do i go back to the store and turn it in?
What Would 1Journeyman Do?

how do you know you didn't have the 20 in your wallet and just forgot?
if it's REALLY bothering you, go return it. the cashier won't be in trouble tomorrow when they balance her register.
EDIT: i'd also make sure that your bank account wasn't hit for the $40

Yep, her drawers gonna be short and most likely its going to come out of her pay and she will probably get WRITTEN UP or something similar.

first of all who goes to a Lowes to get a soda??? is that a local C Store or are you talking about the hardware store...
second... her till will be off by $20 and if you received too much money and you know where it came from what is the dilema??? take it back to her on your lunch or after work... karma man!!!
but make sure your account wasnt hit for $40 first...

it wasnt hit for 40, because the first 2 transactions were all declined.
i know she gave me 40, because i grabbed the money and recpt and stuck it all in my pocket. there was nothing in my pocket when i started off my day.
ru, i dont pass and BOA atm's on my way to work. if i cant find an atm, i go to a cvs/walgreens etc. or supermarket, and buy either a soda or gum, and get cash back. its like using an "out of network" atm, but without the fees. i do it all the time, and have for the longest time.

It surprises me that you are asking this, you seem like an honest person and know what you should do.

Heck with it, they messed up. Why should you have to spend time and money to fix an error on their part? It isn't free to drive back...
Once I went to wendy's and paid with a ten dollar bill. The total was 5 dollars and some change. She handed me back a five dollar bill and the change. I pointed out to her the change was wrong. So I handed it back. She looked at it (non-english speaker clearly didn't know our currency) when she handed it back she'd given me an additional ten dollars. I turned around and handed it back to her and told her in spanish this is wrong this is what it should be. Then she turned around and handed me even more money. Then I did the math with her, and she still didn't understand. So I gave up. And left

If you go past there on the way home might as well take it back. Karma, man... karma...

Yeah, if it's free, it's me. I can't say I'd take it back, either. It's not free, and I really do not have a conscience for when people just give me money. Lowe's isn't gonna miss $20, and that can buy 4 footlongs at Su
ay, which is 8 meals. Your benefit is FAR greater than Lowe's. And truthfully, if she can't count, she shouldn't be working the registers anyway!

i pass lowes on the way home.
i am going to speak to a mgr on my way back.
he'll probably say thank you, and pocket the money, but hey... its off my hands.
in her defense, she was too busy talking to her coworker about this guy that she was all about to realize she doubled my change.
no, the bills werent crisp. it was a 20 and 2 average-used 10's.

She wasn't even paying attention.

I'm going to play the "mom" card and say this: What if you made that mistake and gave too much of YOUR money to someone else... Don't you hope that person would bring it back? Go run along now...
The "your mistake, my advantage" and "every man for himself" mentality is what's killing this world. Give the money back. You don't need it more than you need the guilt of keeping it.
I hate selfish people... but that means I hate myself sometimes LOL

she probably didn't even notice. I've been on the other side, giving out wrong change. If it was an isolated incident we didn't care.
