I am just starting my first tank. Its a 46 bowfront with Lr and Ls. I was totally hooked on getting a lion fish someday when i am more experienced, and way more established. But my tank has began to cycle. I have no idea what to add to the tank there are SO MANY choices. What are some good begginer fish??

After the cycle is done some fun fish are clowns. You can't really go wrong with clowns. They have all different types. Maybe I am biased because that is what I started out with. You may want to pick out one fish which will be the center of your tank, the real eye catcher. The one you will put in 4 or 5 months when the tank is running good. After you know this you could work backwards and find fish that are get along. Does that make sense?

That sounds like a great idea. I am totally attracted to a lion fish. Don't ask me why. So I could have that be the center of my tank in like 6 months. Then until then add some other fish that might be compatible with my lion. In the future of course. I was thinking of having one fish as the center. My tank is not really big enough for a real eye catcher. I guess I don't really know what kind of fish are out there. There are just so many, it is hard to pick them.
thanks,
sarah

Do you know which kind of lion you were wanting? Some of them can get very big, some up to a foot and a half. Keep that in mind.

I checked out that new fish store on allen and west the other day. They had a little mistake with using plastic hydrometers, showed a false reading. Than shot the salinity out the roof! Hope some of the corals make it.
Other than that, they had a decent selection, for around the area. Prices were around average, low on some, high on other fish.
Tropicorium is only open friday-sunday. I'm heading there saturday afternoon. They breed a ton of clowns if thats what you're thinking of starting out with.

I would get a dwarf lion in your 46. They are still good looking as the others. I just don't think a volitan would be happy as they need alot of room and alot of rockwork. Also if you do eventually want a lion, dont get the clownfish, anything smaller than a lions mouth will be ate.

I dunno about the lion. For some reason it caught my eye and I was hooked on it. I don't want an unhapy lion. I think that i am going to the tropicorium this weekend. Just to take a look. My theory is if I can't have fish yet, then I will go to the store and look at their fish.
That new fish store has some fish really cheap. But the nicer ones are kinda expensive. He has a seperate filter for each tank. That is one reason that I like his fish.

I am so glad that you told me that. i would have gone there on a moday. That is a bit of a drive for me. I would have been ticked. Is it really big? how about the prices and quality of their fish. Maybe I will get my things from there from now on.

My first few fish are royal gramma (nice color and hardy) And blue green reef chromis (nice color and thye look great when they school). Thats all for now I am adding slowly. Tank only up 7 weeks. I am eventually gonna add some clowns. Sometime next year maybe a flame angel and a blue tang. Take it slow. let the tank build up.

Congrats on the new set up. As you already stated, a 46 is not huge for this hobby so you are right in being careful about stocking. In my opinion even a dwarf lion may not be a good match for the 46 but there are plenty of other very colorful and interesting fish you can choose.
A pair of percs, royal gramma, and a flamehawk would give you greatr diversity and color. In lieu of the flamehawk you could consider a dwarf angel(coral beauty my fav) in 5-6 months after tank is well established.
This is the fun part of the hobby so enjoy!

i thought on another post you said you already got some fish for your tank? if so you might want to keep them in mind when you get more fish, make sure they are all going to get along, but you should really wait for the cycle to end.

I would check out a flame angel. They are really cool. They need a well established tank. 5-6 months

Don't forget to check out a reef safe wrasse. I got one today that has a pinkish purple head with orange on the top half of it's body and blue on the bottom half. I think it is called a Blueside wrasse. I have also seen the same one called a Velvet Multicolored wrasse. Do a search on reef safe wrasses. The genus Cirrhilabrus has a lot of beautiful ones most are reef safe and peaceful...usually about 4 to 5 inches full grown. There are a lot of really beautiful ones. Too bad I read that you can only keep one male (the most colorful) per tank unless it is a really big tank. I really like the personality of my bicolor blenny also. He is always watching me from his hole in his rock. I have a flame angel that is really nice too. Good luck, Lesley

When you get off GI, take Sibley road, past Telegraph, down to Inkster. Go south on Inkster, its about a 1/2 mile down on the right. 20080 Inkster Road. If you can try speaking to the girl "Jen" atleast she's the one who I trust for good advice.
