Valiant is a little over 4 months olds now. He has grown about 3/4 of an inch since I brought him home. He measured about 3.5 inches snout to tail, and now measures aprox. 4.25. He is the coolest fish I've ever had :joy:

Ah, he is the sweetest! I miss mine, but love to hear how much you enjoy this guy.
There is something about them.

Have you upped his feed since he's grown? It is a fish-weight to food-weight issue (10 to 20% of their wet body weight). They need the increased intake, due to increased size. We are talking grams, but for seahorses, every gram counts (me too!).
Those body spots are beautiful!

He looks kinda skinny in the video to me, but idk. Great fish! One day I hope to have some. Is he the only horse?

Yep, I am currently feeding him 3 times a day. However, considering how fast he gulps it down I think I should up it to 4 times a day. He eats at least 5 mysis per feeding. And spends most of his time hunting pods. So any input regarding up grading his diet would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks, his colaration is awesmoem. His "spikes" are really starting to grow.

Right now yes, he did have a friend....but that is another story.
My birthday is coming up, and as soon as I complete the intake filter shield and set up my QT tank, I am getting Valiant a new buddy!!!! I am going to get a TB yellow male Kuda. I think I will set up the QT tank right next to the 90. Valiant is getting hungry for friends. He hangs out with the fire goby, and when ever I come by the tank he races over for attention.
Eventually I'd like a total of 4 horses in the 90, but I will not get anymore for at least a year. I want to be as knowlegable physically and nutritionally in seahorses as I am with the all other fish I have cared for.

And that will be quite the undertaking. If any of you have any books or referance sites covering the care, housing, feeding, and physical anatomy of seahorses. Please email me at:
rykna.olson@gmail.com
make sure to include 2007 in the subject; I set that up to avoid mass attacks of spam.
Thanks again,
Rykna :happyfish

yeah.....hence the size of my margarita snail. Right now I'm leaving it to increase the pod population too. That will soon be replaced with a plexi intank flow shield and refugium. :happyfish

That is one of the mysteries I have yet to discover. There are many many sites regarding the care and housing of seahorses, however, most if not all, contradict each other. Currently I am going along with the site where I will be ordering my 2nd seahorse. Their measurements for an adult Kuda is 6 to 8 inches from snout to tail.

It is a part of species ID. Start from the top or bottom and count the spines on his "back" or dorsal fin. Please post the number of spines, I'd like to learn. He will never have more spines than he has now.
The photo that shows his black spots perfect, but I just don't trust my eyes. You hit 40-some and it happens.
He does not look skinny to me. They should be lean. A fat seahorse would be a very bad sign. If you are feeding him 3X daily and he has pods to snack on, that is most likely a happy horse.
They are designed to control the "insect" population in the oceans. Particularly the bays and lagoons where the bugs would overtake. Just like a tang or goby or shark, they have a purpose. If you can cater to that, you can be a successful keeper. What a treat in the case of these animals!
Have you trained him to the glass? If you shape your index finger to imitate his profile, he will probably respond. You can only do this if you have one horse.
Like keeping birds, in a way. Very intelligent and social if you invest the time in one.

Wow, awesome info!! That thing about shaping your index finger to imitate his profile is GREAT to know!! I'm still waiting for my horses and will be for a while, but I'm soaking up as much info on them that I can in the meantime.
Great pics of Valient, Ryk!! He really is handsome, isn't he?

I may be wrong, but in the close up pic, I counted 18 spines in the dorsal. What did you come up with Ryk?
