More tax problems

Why I love my gov't pt 1

I inherited a apartment complex from my father, and in the course of the estate process had the complex appraised by a certified appraiser. It came out that the property appraised about $100,000 less than the county had it listed for tax purposes. I went through the complaints process, took the appraisal to the county auditor and the board weighed the "facts" and voted that they did not accept the appraisal.

Must be nice to be able to ignore facts.

So I have a great decision, pay the higher tax, or pay a lawyer to fight the higher tax. Once again the taxpayer loses.

I wish I could vote to ignore the tax laws even though they are "facts".

If they appraise it at 100,000 more, offer to split the difference and sell it to them for 50,000 less than they say it is worth. How could they turn down a deal like that? Amazing how much money we spend in taxes. I don't even want to think what I'm going to pay this year.

Did they offer reasons for the rejection? Could be your appraiser was off base. Might be worth a re appraisal, if they reject the findings of two appraisers you'd clean their clocks in court.

How do the "comps" look against it? Tough telling sometimes with short sales and foreclosures going on though.

No reason offered. They just rejected the appraisal. No reason offered, no reason required per the auditor.
They have the option of rejecting a 100% fair and legal appraisal for no other reason. I can't even vote against them as I live in another county.

Is it 1773 again?

That sucks. We have a retirment community here that has not paid taxes in years and owes like 4 million dollars. They say that they are a non-profit organization and was told that they are exempt. Well it has the community in an uproar. I understand why the gov't gives tax breaks for business because of the jobs and such that they produce but this case seems a little different. For one thing, I don't think they are non-profit and it is crazy expensive to live there. This is basically the place where the elite retire to here. In other words, mrdc won't be living there anytime soon. :(

Don't know who is dumber, the retirement community folks or the government officials who have let them get so far behind.

Oscarduece........If there is another 'comp' that has successfully applied for and been granted a tax reduction then you would have little problem with them in court and could represent yourself or if you have a law school in your area generally they have students that are available to 'practice' law on your behalf at no cost. However, if you have no other 'precident' case then you are stuck and will spend more in lawyers fees versus money you would save if you win.

None of the above.

BOHICA!

Looking forward to the tax increases due 1/1/11

For some reason, I'm missing W Bush.

The harder I work the more they take. My dad's death cost me $90,000 in Ohio death (estate) tax alone.

If they don't stop this spending we're hosed.

how bad do you REALLY have it Oscar? you did inherit an apartment building. lol, when my grandfather past i took a pic of jesus he had, worth about 25 dollars. all of his money went to taking care of my grandmother who had Altzhiemers. she died a year later in the nursing home because she forgot how to swallow and choked on her lunch.

the 3.5% tax increase may hurt guys like you a little and i feel for you. but many millions of honest hard working guys are already BOHICA'd. and it's mainly because of Bush!

So, I am not hard working? Heck, this week alone 56 hours. I spent untold hours in college studying instead of partying. I spent 8 years in med school and residency where all I did was study, learn and work. You have the nads to imply I am not honest and hard working? I thought this country was all about hard word and reward. I guess you buy into the Marxist "to each according to his needs from each according to his means."

I worked HARD to get where I am. My mom and dad worked HARD to get where they were before they died. Yet you sit back and say I owe you something of MY labor?

You are what I would like to see change about this country. Instead of saying "someone has it better than me, you actually get out there and do something about it. It is sad.

What if that 3.5% may have been my budget for buying stuff from SWF.com. I'm sure they would rather have that 3.5%.

What if that 3.5% was my budget to buy the widget you are selling. Now I see how hard that will be on me, I go without something I don't need, and you go out of business.

I am proud of where I am. I make a very good living saving lives. I am not ashamed of my income. When Michael Moore gives all his millions to the gov't I'll give up more of my hard gained income.

In the mean time, class warfare is below the ideals of this country. We all have equal opportunity, but no where in the Constitution is an equal outcome defined. You have to work hard to get it, not have the gov't steal from someone and give it to you.

I hope you would require LeBron and all the celebs/ atheletes to give up their wealth for playing a game. I make my (much smaller) salary fighting disease and saving lives. I'm not really worth more than I am paid now. I have what I need and some of what I want.

Have you told parents that their daughter will not be coming home from prom as she was killed in a car wreck? I have. They can't pay me enough to look into the dad's eyes, and hold the mom's hand while we look at her dead body. I hope I was able to help them in some little way, we tried to make their daughter look as presentable as possible. I said comforting words and sat with them as they grieved.

You are right, I am not hard working.

Death and taxes, both are inevitable. How much 'hard work' did you put into the building, maintenance, and management of this apartment complex your father owned? I think what Vinny was trying to convey, was your ticked for paying these higher taxes (which believe me, I'm with you 100% on that argument), yet you do have the apartment complex worth apparently several hundred thousands of dollars that you inherited on the back side. Like Vinny, when my parents passed, I wasn't left with much of anything monetarily. Yea, it sucks you have to pay the extra taxes. However, unless you put a lot of time and money into this complex while your father was alive, then it's essentially 'free money' that YOU actually didn't 'work' for.
