ok, edit:
they are GENERALLY a bad idea, but SOME HAVE been kept successfully in a reef tank. IMO, it's not worth the gamble because they CAN nip on corals... is that better?

and all butterflies are GENERALLY not good with a reef tank, although SOME specimens have been kept in a reef tank. once again i think it's not worth the gamble because they CAN nip at corals. since your corals are more expensive than your fish, i think it'd be wise to avoid butterflies...

I just want to make this clear so that I don't get any more comments about Idols: I've given up the Moorish Idol idea.

ok i wasn't going to say anything, but since it has obviously bothered clown boy, i have to... i don't know why people are laughing... that is incredibly rude. This guy is on here researching his options before buying, and we're laughing at him? Don't we encourage research first??? i don't understand how you can tell someone to research first and then laugh at him for doing it. Even if it was an even worse question like "can i put a shark in my 100g tank", we still shouldn't laugh. It's an honest question and he deserves an honest answer, not a bunch of comments such as "is this a serious question" or "do you honestly think one person would vote for the idol"? you should all be ashamed of yourselves. it is quite apparent that he didn't know anything about moorish idols, we don't need to rub it in his face and make him feel bad about it! in the future, if you have comments like this for new people who are simply trying to do the right thing, KEEP IT TO YOURSELf!!!

ok, well i was... it's unbelieveable to me how some people can treat some innocent questions like yours... oh well, as long as it didn't bother you :)

jdragunas makes a good point, its not constructive at all to make fun of people's honest questions. everybody is at different skill and knowledge levels and we are all here to learn and have a good time , but not at someone else's expense. (at least in these informational forums). treat every question as a 'real' question and like you were the one asking it - wouldnt you want an answer, even if you knew it was considered common knowledge amongst your peers, and you simply have not been privy to that yet?

i am saying if you didnt know the answer to a question that you asked, but others think that its common knowledge - CASE IN POINT - then the question should still be respected and answered.

??? he didn't state that you are not privy, he simply asked what if you weren't privy...

You clarified it yourself......It's not always right to generalize....You can have good with bad depends on the fish at times......I've seen coral beautys that are perfectly fine, and then I've seen some that will eat everything not nailed down....I have a BiColor that only eats GSP so you figure!!!!!! It's a gamble, but there are 2 butterflies that are still a slight risk, but better than others......

Go for the idol everyone on here has atleast has had a fish die on them on more than 1 occasion im sure but how many of them can say they enjoyed the beauty of an idol in there home. Im sure the fish police will flip out so flame me as you will. Maybe you will be on of the very few people to successfully keep one. You never know till you try. Just make sure you have a large stable system & proper food on hand. What I mean by that is dont toss it in a 30 gal & feed it flake food. :happyfish

You're not just killing 1 Idol, you're responsible for the hundreds of Idols that die when the lfs replaces him. The percentage of them that surive capture and shipping is less than 5% of Henis.

Xdave, could you take a look at my thread and perhaps give some input on some common species?
