Mounting a fixture in a canopy?

I know a lot of people go retrofit but do some also just use a fixture? Do peoples canopy fit over the lights or do you have to come up with a way to mount it in the canopy?

The retrofit lights are exposed, very, very bright. If they are not in a canopy you can't look at it. It's like staring into the sun itself. It makes the eyes water they are so bright.

If you're using a prebuilt fixture within the canopy, you have to come up with a way to mount it inside the canopy. The light fixtures are designed to sit on the plastic ring on top of the tank or hang from above, and the canopy is designed to sit on the same spot. You can add rails for the fixture to sit on in the canopy if you have enough room, or if the canopy is tall enough you can hang it from the top of the canopy.
Be sure and check both measurments and manufacturers recommendations - some fixtures are not designed to be contained within a closed canopy and can overheat potentially causing a fire. Additionally some fixtures are deliberately designed large enough that there is no way you can fit them inside a standard canopy.
Regardless, if you do put one in an enclosed canopy you will most likely have to modify the canopy with some additional fans to help control heat issues within the canopy or on the bulbs themselves (in the case of T5s).
