Moved my 75g. Easier than thought.

Just over a week ago I moved my 75 gallon tank. We got a new house about half an hour away. Here's how I did it:
  • Bought several 10 gallon rubbermaid tubs
  • Emptied as much water as I could into each one
  • Spread the live rock between each tub
  • Put all fish into a tub by themselves (with no rock)
  • Put the live sand into a separate tub
  • Put the sand back into the tank at the new house
  • Dumped all water into the tank
Added the fish back to the tank
First installed the heater to get the water warm
Added any water that was lost during the transfer
    Installed the filters
    Installed the protein skimmer
    Everything worked out great!!
Anyway...just wanted to let everyone know about a successful move. Feel free to post any questions or comments.
Thanks! :joy:

Thanks for the info, I have a 75 I will be moving soon, buying a new house also, and I was wondering how I was going to move it. Do you have any corals or just fish and live rock. My main concern is causing an ammonia spike from removing the sand bed. I wonder if you left the sand bed intact with about an inch of water in the tank and moved it if it would be ok. Seems like it wouldn't be too heavy to move the tank with that little of water in it. I was planning on doing the same thing with the rubbermaid containers. I hope mine goes as smooth as yours did.

You could try moving it with the sand bed intact. Keep in mind that for every inch of sand in a 75 gallon it is an extra 35 lbs. you are carrying on top of the weight of the tank itself. If you have a six inch deep sand bed I would not recommend it.

The only choral I have is a leather. Very strong and easy to work with. I put him it in one of the buckets with the rest of the live rock.
