moving a tank on carpet?

has anyone had any experiance moving a tank on carpet without completely emptying it out? heres the deal, i have carpet now but im thinking about taking it out and puting in tile. i only need to move it...3 or 4 feet and i could probably take out half the water. i think if i use some heavy pnumatic wheels and some 2x4's on edge for a frame i should be able to roll it out of the way and then back over the edge of the tile into place(after the grout work is dont of course). what do you think? any suggestions?:notsure: :help:

If this is a glass tank, you will run the risk of devleoping a leak if you move that tank half filled. I do not have any experience moving an acrylic tank half filled. You will have to lift the tank to get it on your platform. I'd taker most of the water out but leave enough to cover the substrate. Just my opinion...but I feel STRONGLY about the development of a leak with a half filled 75 especially if this is a glass tank.

I agree with scubadoo on this one, is it really worth the risk that, take the extra time and do it right.:D

My wife and I are getting ready to get new carpet on monday. We also bought those round disk like things to help glid across our old carpet. I have a 75 and planning on emptying out about half the tank into one of those garbage cans that have wheels from rubbermaid. Then I have like 4 friends coming over and hopefully it will go smoothly. I brought that leak issue towards my wife and we got into a little arguement, but we settle that if it leaks

Well my 75 WILL become a 125 tall. So I'm willing to take that risk. LOL

As long as I can save everything it's all good. I have a good LFS that would most likely hold everything if my tank breaks till I get the new one. But well see on Saturday when we move it to the dinning room or Monday when it goes back onto the carpet.

Just a newbie but.
Even if you can move the tank w/o cracking the glass you will have a HUGE amount of dust and garbage from prep work, cutting the tile. I did the same thing about six months ago. Put rock with as much water as possible into a new 100 gallon cooler on a furnature mover (2X4 box on wheeles) to roll out of the room while the work was being done. I ran a power head to keep water moving and everything went back just fine.

If I take a hammer to my tank I think I would cry alittle. LOL I would most likely get stuck cleaning up the mess. Thanks Vince I just hope it all works out lol. 3 of my friends are over right now playing poker and they aren't sure how it will all work out but we'll do our best. Let you guys know how it works out tomorrow night.

how bout if i keep it a quarter full..... think it will still develope a leak? im just trying to not have to remove the fish if possible. thanks for all the info, its really been a help. i did stop by a lfs this week and eyed a 150 gal bow front, used that their trying to sell, so i could always do the "upgrade" thing if it did start weaking.

If I were moving the tank, I would only leave enough water to cover the substrate, assuming it is not deeper than 4". Even that is somewhat of a risk for developing a leak or a slight unnoticed crack...that will spread and out comes your water. Do not think the only risk is a slight leak as you risk a massive flood that could occur long after the tank is moved. Sometimes tanks develop a very small crack when moved or unlevel.. The crack will spread as the pressure on the glass will cause it to expand. You have to move it twice...doubling the risk. When I had a 55, I moved it twice but left only enough water in to vocver the substrate.. I was lucky and did not have a leak. If I had to do it over I would take everything out this time. Risk is not worth it in my opinion. BIG FLOOD and my girlfriend would gice me a Big HEADACHEEE!!!!!!!! Best of luck with the move..it is a PITA.

OK........... Well I told you guys that I would give you an update on what happened with the carpet install and moving the 75gal fish tank. Well I didn't move my tank. I had 4 guys over that are pretty good size and they all said that they could move it no problem....... Well the tank they could move but the stand wasn't going to help so we left it there. Once each guy grabbed a corner you could just hear the wood stand start making that popping sound so we all quit. But our carpet looks much better after they carpeted around thew tank and even behind. Wife is pleased with how it looks so I would recommend doing the same. Just if you are going to be selling the house just don't mention the big spot where the tank is that there is the old carpet under it LOL.
