you will not need to let the new tank cycle, however, you should not immediately put the fish into the new tank until it has had ample time to settle. The relocating of substrate will stir up a lot of stuff and disturb the bacteria colonies enough so that they may not quickly process all of it. I did one mine recently over a three day period - kept fish and inverts in holding tanks.

The holding tanks are the key to a successful move. Make sure you setup at least one for your fish before you start tearing the tank down, rubbermaid sumps work excellent, you may wish to consider one for fish, one for corals each with a PH and heater, and still one more for your LR. Start filling them with your waterchange water until the big day. There is quite a bit of debate about the issues involved with the sand. Some say get new, some say put the old on bottom new on top or vice versa. Im still on the fence but if pressed for an answer I think I would go with layering the new and old,get all your sand in with the tank empty then place a bowl or plate on the bottom and fill withwater. Moving or upgrading a tank is always a big undertaking but a lot of preparation and forethought can save you mucho regret and $$,good luck.
