I have a move in a few months from md to az. This equates to about 38 hrs of travel. I have a nano with a few corals, a tiny clown and diamond goby. Of course there is live rock too. Where do I start??? this isn't a little move down the road. Do I get a UPS back up battery and try to transport it in tact? I'm overwhelmed.
Hi, Welcome to the site...
38 hrs of travel time....sell or give away the few corals and fish. Put the live rock in a plastic tub with paper towels or newspaper dampened down with SW, to keep it moist. Have an extra jug of your old water so you can re-dampen it if it starts to dry out (don't just pour water over it), the tub will be so heavy you can't budge it. Sand can just be put in buckets, it will stay wet enough. Pack up the equipment and start over once you get settled in.
The rock may have to be re-cured once you set your tank back up in the new place, the good news is...that will help the tank cycle and it can all be done at the same time with the rock in your tank...after the first cycle, purchase some corals and start to restock your tank.
24 hours is the longest any critter should endure in a bag (the only healthy way to move them. To have the water splashing around as you drive isn't a good idea either. On top of it all, you would need to set the tank back up the moment you arrive to the new digs...after traveling 38 hours, no way.
