Hi all I am planing on moving across the nation and i am looking for suggestions on the best way to move my kids. It is going to be probably a six day trip i am planning on selling my corals and fish, but my concern is my rock and sand, both are beautiful and i dont want to loose them. What i am thinking about is i have a chest freezer i am thinking about putting some towels in the bottom dampen them and putting the rock in and getting sometype of a mesh bag for the sand covering them and possibly putting in some freezer packs...also i have lots of mushrooms on the rock will they survive? any suggestions would be greatly appreciated
thanks

That's a toughie. I was thinking of shipping them to your destination if someone can receive it there. I guess it's too far fetched. Let's see, 6 day-trip plus a few more days (because you probably won't set it up as soon as you arrive...tired!)It's going to be an ordeal on all your life forms. How about starting over? Sell. I dare say that's what's going to happen because the trip is just too long for the poor critters to make it. Maybe the live sand would not be as "stressed" as the rocks, it is shipped by online stores the same way they ship dry goods (about 7 days). Good Luck.

but remember, the LS is sealed in bags with O2 before it is shipped via ground. There will be die-off in the sand as well if it is not fed for 7 days.

your chest freezer, is it by any chance on wheels? if so i would say put some water out of your tank in there. put the sand on the bottom and put the rock on top of that. you can always wheel it up on a truck. if so i would put just enough water to cover the rocks and sand up though. maybe if you are taking a break or something you can put the freezer in the sun and open the lid and give it a little light. my ideas kinda far fetched but 7 days or so is a long time, and this would give you a way to save some of your cycled water too. moving is tough especially all the way across the country. all i can say is good luck. have you been thinking about upgrading? this owuld be the best time, just thought id throw that in.

I just recently completed a move due to new carpeting that took me 4 days. Here is what I would suggest if you can do this.
1. Go to the local hardware store and buy a couple 18 gallon rubbermaid containers with lids.
2. Syphon water from your tank into these containers then place the live rock in the two containers. This will be heavy, but the live rock should be ok.
3. If at any chance open the lid and give the rocks some sunlight.
If you keep the lid closed or transport with just wet towels you may get a lot of die off on the rocks. My rocks lived for 4 days with light and just moving the water around every few hours. If you can do this during your move you might be successful, otherwise you might want to look at alternatives (selling rock, or shipping).

P.S. Look for some of my recent posts, they contain everything that I did on moving step by step.
