We bought our daughter a samsung mp3 player for her b-day. I cant get it to connect to my windows media center on my new computer-Windows vista - it shows hooked to the computer, but cant get it to connect to the media center.
We hooked it to my sons computer and it showed right away in the media center, he has windows xp. The problem is it synced every song, video and picture on his computer and I have no clue how to get them off. I am so ready to take this thing back. My sons ipod was much easier.

when you open up the windows media player there is a button on the top of the player that says "SYNC" (should be in red letters)... click it and it will find the MP3 player...

You might try locating the external drive (mp3 player) on your computer as well as the folder you store your music in, and then just try manually transferring by copying the files and pasting them in the folder for the mp3 player. I always do mine this way rather than messing with media player.
