Hey mudplayer or anyone else, Ive read your thread on fragging xenia and the best methods to secure them but what im fuzzy about is the best place to cut the xenia? Do i cut the stalk where it attaches to the rock? higher up the stalk? or some other method? what about ones that have 2 stalks(frag them or wait and theyll split?)? what have you guys found most successful? Thanks for the help
By the way these are pompom xenia i have

Well IME i found that they dont do well if you cut from the main stalk at all. Internode or not.
My advise would be to let it spread a bit then try and get the entire stalk. The glass is the easiest place to cultivate from. If you can get them to colonize on the glass, then u can just scrap them off and put them in a tupperware container and let them attach on their own~~!

Imsure Mudplayerx will chime in w/ some helpful info too.....

mine are all on a piece of lr i got. I would just let them spread but ever since i got my new lights the seem to have grown a lot of little heads on the stalks and now they look kinda ragged. Wasnt sure if they were dying or multiplying but pretty sure theyre starting to "grow like weeds" lol

I like to cut them as close to their attach point as possible. You can cut them higher than that though if you'd like.. you really cant go wrong.
The ones that are in the middle of splitting could be fragged but you could also wait until they actually split and then you'd get to frag more than one. If one is in the middle of splitting and you frag it it'll probably stunt its growth for a short while.
Also aside from where to frag it..... I personally have fragged them and let them spred on their own.. fragging is nice if you yourself want to choose where they go... otherwise letting them do their own thing is much better in my opinion.

looking at how theyre splitting im not going to frag them except for one. I want to start a new colony on a different piece of live rock to trade at lfs. A friend there said they will always buy them and i could use it to pay for some different corals for the tank

Sorry guys, I've been really busy with this stupid calculus class that is killing me.
I've found the best results come from cutting at the lowest point possible on the stalk. Using scissors is best in terms of ease and how well the xenia recovers from the dull cut (razor blade cuts tend to equal more recovery time).
While I haven't run into any difficulties in cutting TOO low on the stalk, I have had problems when I left too much of the stalk on the rock. There were a few times where I cut the stalk in the middle, and the stalk left on the rock decayed.
Make sure that you keep your ph and alkalinity in line! I just screwed mine up by adding the wrong bottle of kalkwasser mix (I keep premixed high and low concentrations) and shot my alkalinity through the roof. Needless to say I think I may be loosing all my 4th generation xenia.... a very severe loss as their hardiness was unsurpased by any xenia I have seen. I think I have killed my red jewel flowerpot as well

very sorry to hear about that mud but thanks for the reply and advice. Its weird, ive had high nitrates for the last 6 days and they seem to love it???? Like every single stalk of mine has split since the nitrates went up. Many new "hands" growing as well since the raise. weird :notsure:

Yeah i know school sucks. I have fragged quite a few and never a problem. Its simple easy and dont worry about it. They will grow back. They always do. I've noticed that when in fast current they wont attach well and the ones that i have attached dont grow as big?? Other than that give em 3 days and they will stick, a week and they're stuck. Good Luck

ive actually grabbed hold of my xenia and just peeled the whole thing off of the rock, where it attatches to the other xenia, thats ewhere i cut it. or you can just put a little rock in the middle of the colony and wait for it to attatch to that.
