its at the very end (page 65 ) of the link I just posted.
he hasn't done a water change on that system since 2008
Not saying thats a good idea,l but its interesting.
I fought off my GHA problem after about 2 months
I still do 10% water changes a week weather I need it or not though.
I think I would have to continue to do water changes for the simple fact of repleneshing the system with elements and minerals. I'd probably still run a skimmer as well.

I agree on the minerals, that why i do it too, he doses all his.
As far as the skimmer I shut mine off after I didn't see a point to it anymore except to burn electricity. may people run both though.

well, actually SantaMonica does have a premade one, really nice too, but I think he gets like 600.00 for them.
Trust me its much more satisfying to make your own for 10 bucks, throw a 30 dollar pump on there and 20 bucks worth of lights and have yourself a serious piece of equipment that you hand made for about 60 bucks, hard to beat.
To skip past all the reading on that long thread just go to the website and look up what you need to make one and what the requirements are.
The key is you need to have the correct size screen for your gallons of tank water and the correct amount of flow over the screen which is dependant on the width of the screen,a nd the correct amount of light, and close enough (within 4 inches of the screen)
only other thing to do is clean it once a week in tap water weather it looks like it needs it or not. Takes about 5 minutes
I should really jsut do a build thread so I can quit hijacking all these peoples threads...

I sure wish there was a thread that someone could point me to that describes what this turf scrubber is and how it works and how to make one and all that jazz.
A simple description is here: http://www.radio-media.com/fish/AlgaeScrubbers.doc
