Okay...what you need are a ton of hermit crabs, they love brown algae. I don't know what apples you are talking about. The tank isn't bad, you just need to get the algae under control.
How long has your tank been up? Brown algae blloms are very normal for new tanks and it will go away on it's own.

What kind of lights? Older Fish only bulbs might be the reason. I would swap it out for a sun bulb, they go in a fish only light but have a different spectrum...I THINK, I say I THINK because I'm no expert on lighting, and I'm trying to remember my freshwater days with those fish lights...the sun bulb made the fish look better...something to do with spectrum.

Ok your tank is six months old so brown algae is understandable it will go away. You probably had a short cycle when you moved the system unless it was totally torn down when you got it. Then you had a normal cycle, so that means your tank is really been out of cycle for 4 months. Just run your light for a shorter time, I run mine during the time I'm home from 6 to 10, this should help keep the algae down. Also just a note, butterflies need an well established tank at least a year old to survive, also make sure the fish eats at the LFS, because if they don't eat for them they probably wont eat for you.
Good Luck, glad to see didn't leave the site, you've been one of the most active members lately.
