sorry boys..... girls aren't gonna fix this one.
TXReef........at the risk of being totally flamed (everyone if you have had nothing to do with this keep uneducated comments to yourself please
)...........has anyone given him the option of ECT's?? This is something once thought of as barbaric......I witnessed them when they were MANY years ago. I fought this option for my Mom last summer as I saw them 20+years ago and did not see the advantage. Last summer it was a last resort of sorts and after a few sessions plus new meds she is a totally different person. NOT (NOT !!!...) a perfect person, but back to some sort of normal. These have come A LONG WAY in the past many years.
He has to become educated in the fact that this is his physiological make up and he has many options to "save his life". But he has to work at it. A lot of these disorders are chemcial imbalances and not true mental disorders. Theycome off as such because of their behavior.
If you look at the TRUE meaning to manic depressive illness and how Lithium (many years ago was discovered) has had such a powerful and effective impact on this disorder, you would be shocked. But as with all drugs they have to be taken regualy.
I don't envy you.......this is my daily/weekly/yearly routine and has been for years, but he is young and needs a lot of postive influences to teach him this is his "new" way of life if he really wants to suceed in it. If this were 30+ years ago he would not stand a chance, but now there are many avenues for him.

Is it possible that I can get him in somewhere? Are there any programs put there that are free? Do I have any "right" to try to get him placed somewhere and would anyone really listen? Those

at the emergency room decided he wasn't a harm to himself or anyone else and discharged him against my recommendation. He has a history of this and they totally ignored that. I guess since he is on medicaid they do as little as possible, which really angers me. I love my brother very much, but I cannot afford to take off of work and watch over him.
Also, what are ECTs?
Don't worry about being flamed, you seem to understand this situation and seem to have plenty of experience in dealing with this. I really appreciate it.

Sorry to hear about your brother. Does Texas have anything similar to the Baker Act we have in Florida? It allows law enforcement to pick someone up and have them mentally evaluated for up to 72 hours. I know you need long term help, but the situation you faced with the hospital signing him out after only a few hours would have been a good time. I've been out of law enforcement for many years, but we used to use this frequently and many times at the family's request.
Good luck and be strong

What does his Doctor say? His Doctor can get him admitted...........medicad does cover some of those things. (at least in MO)
ECT's.......electroconvulsive therapy (shock treatments) http://www.psycom.net/depression.central.ect.html There is a lot of info out there, I just landed on this one for you.
These are not the same a years and years ago. They were horrid then. If I didn't see it with my own eyes when my mom had them last summer, I wouldn't have believed it. She hasen't had a relapse since (meds also)
She was all over the place stability wise. Mania, depression, rapid cycling.
Most psychiatrists do these........and hopefully his Doctor is willing to jump in and help your brother by talking about his options.
HTH and good luck............

lovethesea's right. ect is electroconvulsive therapy. in layman's term, this is where they treat the patients with depression with "jumpstarting" the brain cells, or neurons, to make the flow normal again. kind of like when u jumpstart a car when the battery's dead......
this kind of treatment is actually illegal
now. any hospital should not be doing this treatment anymore. i wouldn't think of this option to be done with your brother.

You should really do a bit more research. There are some states that have stiff requirements of the treating physician and there are some state that don't mention the treatment at all in law.
The treatment does not claim to make things normal. It has its side-effects.
This is too serious a situation to spout off if you have no clue.

i'm sorry poniegirl.. i presume u did not read it right. i said it is ILLEGAL. which means, it is prohibited by the law. and, yeah, i'm an RN too.
also, when i said i agreed with lovethesea, i didn't particularly mean that i agreed with all that she mentioned. it's her opinion, she's entitled to it. i only mean that i agree specifically to what does ECT means. just the definition itself.
plus, i don't think it is appropriate to flame each other here. txreef is in a very difficult situation right now, and this is the last thing that he would need.
Tx, be assured that ur family is included in our prayers. HE will provide. God Bless....

strange........they are legal here and used widely. Like I said, they are nothing like they used to be. They have been changed a lot.
My moms room mate just had 6 treatments over a 3 week period.
His Doctor will be able to tell him whats right for him. Hopefully his Doc will not just give him meds and leave him. Its a work in progress.......believe me.

His case worker at MHMR is very good at handling my brother. He knows him very well and my brother can't BS him.

hopefully his caseworker can get the ball going on the help he needs. But if he is in a mania......my money is that he doesn't think he needs help right now. Hopefully your bro is wanting help and then the caseworker can move ahead. How does he get his meds??? (when he takes them) Through a psychiatrist or PA at a clinic?
Sometimes unfortunately people like him are written off, espcially in a clinic situation.
Its going to take a lot of cooperation on your brothers part so that he can get the right meds/counseling/help. Otherwise his future will be more of the same as you are seeing now.
Fortunately you have the internet at your disposal. Do some searches on mental health, manic depressive illness, etc. here is one that I have seen before http://www.samhsa.gov/MentalHealth/m..._public_i.aspx
My mom got a lot of help from here for many years http://www.placesforpeople.org/#
now this is ST LOUIS, but your case worker should know of something similar is in your area. Read their history under the "agency info" tab. It is really a great organization.
I hope I haven't dumped too much info on you........like I said its a work in progress and he can't slip through the cracks as so many do.

TX keep the faith it is a long hard road...I suffer from Bi-Polar and have been dig. with Manic behavior and have spent lots of time in "Green Wood" here in GA...It is not something you can get over and lots of times it will control you..Sometimes you can take deep breaths and calm others your just there physicaly not in any control of your actions..I dont condone a ton of medicine..Just what works..I for example have to take Lithium 3 times a days and 1200mg of Seroquel..Has a textbooks of sideeffects....Turned me into a zombie for 6 months..I finally came outta the trance it has and have been okay for the last 2 years..If I am in a situation where I dont have it for say a week or more I can feel myself getting edgy again and hence the Hyper-Manic Behavior...You should call some places and talk to your mom and see what options you have to get him in a place that that..A rehab/Mental Health program..If he doesnt want to go you might have to have him 10-13'ed..Invoul.

My brother DID kill himself.
I know what you're going through.
It's rough. If I could survive it when I was 13, you can. Sorry to hear about it.
