So ive had this crocea for almost a year and this morning I find it face first in the sand and his byssal threads completely detached from his shell and tissue???
Im guessing he just out-grew the hole he was previously attached to. But why would he drop his byssal threads?
I fliped him over before I left this morning and just checked him on my lunch break and he looks fine.
He was aprox. 25'' from the top of my 250w 20k mh pendent...
Nothing changed in terms of parameters.
Is my clam gona be allright????

Where was the byssal thread at??? I have seen mine let go of something before and leave some of the thread behind. As long as he is opening and looks okay I dont think I would worry to much.

Nobody wants to answer that question because we just don't know. Why he let go, if after the fall he'll be OK, etc... There is no way of knowing. Clams, since they have such a limited number of indications that they are OK, it's to hard to try and reassure you without ever having seen the tank or the clam.
One thing to look for though would be any typed of parasites. Those would cause him to want to up and move, but other than that, it is real hard to tell.
Pyramid snails are a pretty common parasite...

He only fell about an ince. Just enough to flip his on his face.
Tizzo: Thanks and ive read that thread on the snail you speak of but havent noticed any parasites.
What about possible sand that may have entered the shell...could this be a dibilitationg factor? He looks fine but like you said, im just looking for some reassurance~!

Does he have a gaping hole where the threads were?? If as many as it sounds like are on that rock he should have a hole there. If it hasnt got a hole there, I think I would just wait and see it can be hard to tell. My clam had a hole all the way through , I could see the sand but other than that he looked great, and now he has completely healed. I read on here it is possible for them to tear that muscle, but thtey can heal.

huh...interesting....
See this is what weird...he fell off the rock and none of the threads stayed attached to the rock or him, and whats looks like the entire muscle and "pack" of threads was floating around...there was a noticible "hole" where what looks like the muscle was supposed to be attached to the shell, but when i flipped him over it is inturn covered by sand.
Should i put him on some rock so that he has sufucient conditions to grow the threads back? i.e. not covering the hole?
