My lfs recomended that I use fish I want to keep to cycle my 55gal tank what does anyone think about that?

odds are, the fish you want to keep won't be damsels and mollies (I'm assuming u might want a fish other than them) assuming ur using a different fish to cycle, then i'll say you shouldn't. It might die. only VERY hardy fish can make it through a cycle, and even they perish sometimes. A cycle is very difficult to live through. Why don't u just drop some frozen shrimp from the grocery store in there and let that do the cycle, or you could use LR, if ur planning on having LR in ur tank.

Obviously, if you can do that, it's a better way to go. However, like was said before... chances are the fish you are ultimately going to want in your tank won't be suitable starter/cycling fish. However, I have heard of people cycling their tanks with clowns, and we all know how popular clown are, expecially among reefers. Also, I know more than a few people who have chromis in their tank (me being one of them), and I know people have cycled their tanks with chromis too.
So it certainly can be done, but it doesn't have to be that way. I cycled with common damsels, and returned the to the LFS when my cycle was finished. That's probably what most people do.
