sweet. i wonder what kind of lighting they have for that since it's so much higher than the surface of the water.

I was thinking the same thing. My guess is that they have some major mh's that lower down for a few hours minimum after the public leaves. Maybe somebody who's worked at one of these facilities will chime in.

One day I will win the lotto and have a room in my house for this sort of thing! LOL
The lotto might build it for you, if you hit a big one, but you would never be able to afford the monthly cost from then on

I asked the same lighting question while i was at the shedd aquarium in Chicago, and i soon learned that all of the coral were fake. I wouldnt be surprised if this was the case here....
But it is in Hawaii, so maybe they have green house type glass up top that allows natural sunlight in.

The idea of them being "fake" has never crossed my mind. I can see where some of the back area corals might be fake, but the aquariums I have visited...I would be astonished to find out that their corals were not real. If they are, they have done one heck of a job of making them flow (flexible) and as realistic as possible IMO...

LOL .. I know. I'd love to have a huge reef like that. Forget an indoor pool, I want an indoor reef!
I did see a video (I think the link was on here a year or so ago) of a guy that did this in his basement. He built all this in when he was building his house. Totally unbelievable, but for what....

I mean, who's going to see it? And the cost to keep it up has to be in the six figures.

Oh I'd totally do it for myself. My husband and I are those reef keeping weirdos that spend hours sitting in front of the fish tank instead of watching their 72" tv that they spent a fortune on and are still paying off, LOL. We'd spend out life in that room.

ha woops, after reading the title i just figured this was in hawaii...
You can actually have coral green houses almost anywhere in the U.S
Anthony Calfo has one in Pittsburg PA, and in a lecture i saw of him, he said that he has to shade the coral a couple months out of the year in PA. That sounds crazy to me, but its true.
Oh, and in the last post about the Shedd, i didnt mean that all the coral in the entire place was fake, i just meant that in their tide pool, and several other tanks they display faux coral.
Only specific reefs within their reef display are actually real.

oh yeah i knew u didnt mean everything was fake. the walls in the shark tank are reefs but its all fake. it looks awesome though. its a tunnel through the tank so sharks swim over u.
it looks like your really on a reef
