My crocea clam under pc lighting....

First off, no need for flaming :D . Ive done all kinds of research on clams. This crocea clam was a surprise gift from my girlfriend a week ago. So i really couldnt do anything about it. She looooooves clams and think there the koolest looking thing to have in a saltwater tank, so she went out and bought one without telling me so she can look at it in my tank lol. Of COURSE she gets the one that is the MOST light demanding of all clams, that figures. Anywayz, whats done.... is done so im just gunna go at it and see what the results will be. These are pictures of the clam after a week under 260watt PC's in a 44G tank (48Lx12Wx18H). I have him about 4-5 inches from my lighting. I feed the tank DT's Live Phytoplankton a few times a week. Hes about 3- 3 1/2 inches in size. He seems to be doing great so FAR :nervous: (knock on wood). Weather he thrives or starts browning and dying off ill posts pictures of the results to show you guys the ending results of croceas under PC. You guys with PC's also can take this as a learning experience. Feel free to throw in your own comments!

I am interested in how it does... I love them myself but skip by them everytime I go to the Store..... I have 2x65w Smartpaq 10,000k daylight & 460nm actinic side by side lights on my tank for my PC's.. They are new because I broke my last pair.. OUCH!!
DOes anyone ever have a bad habit of cracking thier pc's?? Also, the square pin's are so hard to find in your average store...

OK, here is my experience with some croceas that were kept for a few months under vhos, and then put in my tanks under a 250w 10k ushio and pc atinics. I think I posted about this a long time ago. The results you see are after about 2 - 2.5 months. I couldn't really chart growth rate, because the clams were at the LFS under the vhos. Anyways, the before pictures are the clams just after they were put in my tank, the afters are the same clams after a few months. Notice both the better colors, and in the photos of the two clams, the mantles aren't 'reaching' to the light, ie, they are getting enough light now. Just my $.02. I've kept 4 different species of giant clam, and croceas I really think have to be kept under MH lighting, at least in terms of long term care.
Before 1:

They look great! I may pick ONE up and put it high up on the rockwork and see how it does.....
Right now I am fighting cyanobacteria and algea though..?? I dunno why all of a sudden I have an outbreak, I think it may have to do with lack of a cleanup crew...I just did a water change because I was neglecting it for a while (minimal care) only because I wasnt adding anything, and my CP's broke and I couldnt find any anywere, everthing in my tank is 3 yrs old. Now, I am so mad at myself, so working on it and waiting for CUC to arrive.. =)
Thanks a bunch, Kim :nervous:

Good luck with the clam, keep us posted. My husband also likes to buy things for our 30 gallon sw tank cause he "likes them". I think I finally have him convinced to read first and buy later (maybe that is)... LOL

Jackalpupz, those clams I had were on both the rockwork (the small one in the second group of pictures, and the blue/green one) and on the sand (the blue and brown one) when they were at the LFS. And remember, croceas have different (stronger) lighting needs than maximas, so just because someone else keeps a maxima under pc lights doesn't mean a crocea will do well under the same lights. Seriously, I would either upgrade lighting or take the clam back. While some people have success keeping such clams in VHO/PC lighting, most people don't.

I definitely advise against it, not with just 130 watts of PC light IMO.

Thanks for your suggestion but I am not gunna return it nor would i be able too. I dont know ANY fish store around here that takes back anything in saltwater anywayz. Im gunna stick this one out and see for myself whats gunna happen. Im never gunna learn unless I try for myself and see for my own eyes that its not capable of happening. That link to the guy and his maxima is just one of the many links ive found about success with PC+ maximas & croceas. I also know there is alot of ppl who have failed. So dont get me wrong, I dont think its gunna be easy by any means. But the few ppl who have had success have very beautiful clams under PC and that is very inspiring. LIke i said before, since the damage is already done (girlfriend buying me crocea as surprise without telling me) Im gunna go ahead and try my best to keep it alive and healthy. I think water quality has alot to do with it also. Me having no fish and 2 pounds of LR a Gallon and doing regular water changes and tests to keep my water in check will help out alot. Also him being only 4 and a half inches from my light helps out alot with getting the most intense light possible out of those PC's. I also feed regularly with DT's Live marine Phytoplankton. If all this isnt good enough and I still fail, then I will never ever put another crocea clam under PC lighting again, and thats a promise :) . Thanks for all the comments.

Viper,
YOur probably right, ?what was I thinking? I will stick to the ones that will do well under my lights.. plenty to pick from..
Someday I may set up a smaller tank just for the clams becuase I do love them.... And get all the right lighting..
Gosh, I love this board...
Thanks for the gentle "slap" LOL
