The damsels are dying because they are in a cycling tank. Don't buy any more fish until your cycle is finished.

Do you have a test kit? When your ammonia, nitrites, and nitrates have all returned to zero and your ph is 8.2 you are done cycling. Then you can slowly start adding fish. If you add too many at once you'll throw your tank into another cycle.

first off, im just going to lay this out there: DO NOT CYCLE WITH FISH!!!! PUTTING FISH AN A KNOWN TOXIC ENVIRONMENT IS EXTREAMLY CRUEL.
{EDIT: YOU ARE FREE TO DISAGREE WITH THIS METHOD IN A REASONABLE WAY, BUT NOTE THAT IT IS CONSIDERED A VALID METHOD. PLEASE DO NOT INSULT OR FLAME OTHER PEOPLE. IT DOES NOT ENCOURAGE PEOPLE TO LEARN AND PARTICIPATE TO BE ADDRESSED THIS WAY}

Not trying to flame. just saying. please dont put these fish in an environment where they could (and as you can see, DO) get poisoned and pretty much have a prolonged suffering. But that being said:
You will know your cycle is done when your amonia, nitrate, and nitrite levels are all at 0.
Edit: what? why was that edited? i was not flaming. i even stated that i wasnt flaming. i just put it all in CAPS to make sure that it wouldnt be overread?

Easy..., remember many LFS give different advice, also many older books recommend fish to start the cycle, I do agree with you though...

i wasnt trying to yell, just typeing in caps to make sure that that part was read.
and im sorry, but the advice doesnt matter, if your fish are dieing you should realize something is up is all i was saying. same thing with books. I know some people have come on here not knowing that cycling is toxic. heck, when i listened to my LFS i didnt know it either until i came on here. But if your fish are dieng, you should be cued in.

Good grief...not this again.

Tons of Opinions on this subject but in the end Its still your choice. Both methods work, but as devoted fish keepers we should be concerned about our fish-ies health.

con; just go down the the store and pick up an ammonia and nitrite test kit and a small bottle of amquel. If your test shows positive for ammonia your tanks not cycled. This is the likely source of your problems.
Add some amquel per instructions to detoxify the ammonia if its present and this may save the remaining fish and your cycle will continue.
We all make mistakes and this is a common one. Continue to visit forms and maybe do some reading/research and you will have the basics down in no time and things will start looking up for.
You will know your tank is cycled and ready to start slowly adding some fish when your ammonia and nitrite test show zero
Good luck.

I agree with you....cycle with dead shrimp has been the only way I will cycle a tank. Have helped out quite a few friends setting up a salt tank and have never used a live fish to do so. However, many books and LFS will suggest using damsels to cycle a tank and many people will do exactly that.

I agree with you 100%. To me, it does not matter if it is a valid method or not but if you know, then you should not do it. You kill your fish or you torture them when all you need to do is cycle you tank another way.
My LFS told me to use damsels when I started but I had been told otherwise so once he told me that I went and found another LFS to buy my setup and everything else.

A Damsel may be a cheap fish , and a pain in the butt , but still a good looking living thing ...... I have a blue damsel in my tank and i think he is one of the better looking fish in my tank .... and really doesnt bother a whole lot ..... my tang lets him know when he gets on his nerves .... and my maroon cloan and the damsel seem to like to hang out in the same spot with each other

Easy there ocean. I highly doubt that damsels mother appreciates you calling her cheap

I don't know. My tank just completed the cycle in 2 weeks and 3 days. I used nothing but Live Rocks. Patience is good for everything. I thought about the shrimp and the fish, both advised in Satlwater for Dummies, but figured I would let nature take it's course. I also added the live bacteria stuff per the directions, and this worked. :)

Toyshika-Hooray for you!! You read first, listened second, and did the right thing. I ALWAYS cycle my tanks with live rock or something already dead. I abhor killing anything-though it is possible to cycle a tank with live fish-just not a BUNCH of live fish.
Oh, and YES, vegetarians do eat animal crackers! I am a vegan (coulda guessed, huh?)
cant kill spiders or mice either-even flies (my husband has no truoble with doing away with any of the above)

Funny I see this post today. I am helping a friend set up a 55 on a small budget. Got her a free 55G, free cheap lights, filter, and heater. Bought her a stand as a gift. I set it up with LS and salt and threw in a PH and a bunch of fake stuff. I explained the cycle and told her to get a dead shrimp. SHe stopped by Fish Pros in Raleigh, NC. 919-233-1122 and she told them what she was doing and they gave her dead shrimp and 5 Damsels. I could not believe it. They said if any of them make it, we will let you trade them in for other fish.
That advice sucks and as she becomes an addict like many of us, she will probably not shop there any more.

Yes, I could not believe my LFS told me that. I thought for sure if anyone would care about the fish it would be them. And that is the reason I chose to go somewhere else, because if they dont care about thier fish than I am not going buy from them.
It is sad because a lot of people cycle with Damsels because that is what they were told to do by the LFS and did not know any other way. I was lucky to have read a book that the author was against that, and told me of a better way.
